The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Hillsborough Arts Council’s Executive Committee (EC) of the Board of Directors (BOD) and is responsible for the organization's achievement of its mission.

The ED serves as the organization's primary spokesperson, articulating the community's mission, vision, and goals. The non-exempt, salaried position is funded at 40 hours per week with some flexibility for additional hours upon approval of the Board Chair (or his/her designee). The ED will manage a staff of direct reports including (but not limited to) the Programs & Marketing Director, Bookkeeper, and Gallery & Gift Shop Manager.

This position is available to local candidates only. Requires work on-site in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance and Development:

Signature authority for outside vendors and programs
Work with the Executive Committee, Programs & Marketing Director, Treasurer, Gallery & Gift Shop Manager, and Bookkeeper to prepare and review HAC programs and annual operations budgets.
Oversee organizational procurement process and expenses in line with annual budgets and purchasing procedures. Supervise bookkeeper for ongoing implementation.
Collaborate with the Executive Committee to plan and oversee the execution of HAC’s annual and long-term development strategy.
Foster and maintain donor relationships through written proposals and personal visits with individuals and institutional entities.
Regularly assess and report on progress toward development goals to the Executive Committee.
Supervise the composition of HAC’s annual fundraising appeal letter, assisting with coordination as needed.
Identify and explore new funding sources and strategies, such as endowments, planned giving, matching gifts, and capital campaigns.
Oversee funding proposals/grant strategy to increase HAC’s funding and assure sustainability. Collaborate with the development committee and key staff on writing and compilation. Empower the Program Director and other staff/volunteers to identify new funding opportunities for consideration.
Maintain a grant reporting calendar and coordinate with the development committee to prepare all grant reports in response to requirements and deadlines.
Ensure best practices in charitable giving & development are employed by staff and development committee, including the proper management of confidential donor information and fundraising data.

Program Strategy:

Oversee the Program Director and their management of programs, events, and program volunteers. Maintain frequent and clear communication with HAC’s Program Director. Clearly communicate organizational goals, program quality expectations, and adherence to deadlines.
Supervise Gallery & Gift Shop Manager, ensuring optimal operations of HAC’s physical presence in downtown Hillsborough.
Report regularly on program team needs and progress to the Executive Committee. Advocate on behalf of programs to the Executive Committee.
Oversee ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness, funding, and relevancy to HAC’s mission and strategic plan.
Oversee volunteer recruitment strategy, and provide resources to staff for implementing volunteer recruitment and onboarding procedures.
Clearly communicate HAC policies to staff and ensure accountability. Advocate for changes in policies as needed to the Executive Committee for revision and adoption.

Marketing & Public Relations:

Oversee Marketing Director, ensuring consistency and quality of external marketing and communications including but not limited to HAC’s website and newsletter, HAC calendar, artists’ directory, radio and television, print publications, and social media.
Serve as HAC’s first point of contact for all media.
Serve as HAC’s ambassador and spokesperson in Orange County.
Serve as HAC’s liaison and representative to partner organizations such as, but not limited to, the Orange County Arts Commission, Hillsborough Visitor’s Bureau, and the Town of Hillsborough.

Leadership/Administration:

Provide leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the organization in alignment with HAC’s short and long-term goals.
Oversee the development and implementation of policies and procedures which govern HAC’s operations.
Communicate regularly with the Executive Committee.
Prepare and deliver the Executive Director’s monthly report at least 5 days before monthly board meetings.
Oversee all administrative operations.
Identify opportunities for organizational improvement.
Oversee implementation and maintenance of consistent information management processes and procedures, communicating these clearly, and providing corrective guidance to staff/volunteers as needed.
Serve as HAC’s first point of contact for all regulatory government agencies.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines.
ED will self-assess and identify opportunities for personal and professional development. The Executive Committee will provide support for continuing education in best practices and professional development in nonprofit management for ED, and ED will be expected to keep up with current industry trends.
ED will establish and implement evaluation metrics for other HAC staff under their purview.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and effectively build relationships
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including an excellent command of the English language and demonstrated skill in organizing and presenting information in a logical format
Demonstrated organizational, communication, management, and interpersonal skills
Proven ability to develop strategic partnerships with relevant organizations
Proficiency in grant writing, fundraising, and donor development
Strong project management skills
Energetic, forward-thinking, and creative with high ethical standards
Flexibility with the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward at the same time
Solution-oriented and ability to guide conflict resolution
Experience with strategic planning and implementation
Attention to detail in support of strategic vision
Ability to articulate a vision of growth for the organization

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

5+ years working in the non-profit sector
2+ years working in the arts & culture industry, preferred
Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university (preferred), or an equivalent
combination of education and work experience
Proven experience leading a team and skills in managing staff and/or volunteers
