Job Overview

Democracy Docket is seeking a Reporter with strong news-gathering and writing skills and a passion for voting rights and democracy to join our rapidly growing News Team. The Reporter will pitch, report, and write a mix of news-driven updates, second-day follow-ups, analysis, explainers, investigative deep-dives, and newsletters, with a focus on original reporting that advances stories on the national voting and democracy beat. Key coverage areas include the Trump administration, Congress, the RNC, the federal courts, federal election and voting agencies, Washington D.C. think tanks, and the national voting and democracy debate. The ability to break news is a major plus. There will also be opportunities for collaboration with our state-level voting and democracy Reporter, where these beats overlap.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pitch, report, and write articles in a range of formats on national voting and democracy issues.
  • Cultivate sources and stay informed on key developments related to voting rights, elections, and democracy.
  • Contribute to Democracy Docket’s weekly newsletter by drafting copy, copyediting, and assisting with distribution.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism or another writing-focused role.
  • Strong reporting and writing skills with a demonstrated passion for mission-driven journalism.
  • Solid understanding of voting rights, elections, and redistricting in the courts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively, mixing breaking news stories with longer enterprise reporting.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Naturally inquisitive and passionate about voting rights and democracy.
  • Familiarity with AP style is preferred.
  • Experience with WordPress and/or Mailchimp is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with editors, co-reporters, and other colleagues.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required

Work Environment

This is a full-time role based out of our Washington, D.C. office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary Range: $75,001-$85,001
