Friends of Perry-Mansfield seeks an exceptional Executive Director to transform the business model and lead our historic performing arts organization into its next chapter. Founded in 1913, Perry-Mansfield is America's first and oldest performing arts camp, located on a stunning 74-acre historic property in the heart of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The mission is to provide young people superior arts training in body, heart, and mind and to promote creativity, a sense of the close association of the arts, and the values of a way of life close to nature.


Perry-Mansfield serves over 250 students annually through comprehensive dance, theater, and equestrian programs including residential summer intensives for teens, emerging artist camps, young artist programs, pre-professional training, arts discovery camps for ages 8-12, and year-round community oriented programs and productions. Our faculty, students and alumni perform on Broadway, with major dance and theater companies worldwide, and attend the most prestigious university arts programs.


About the Role

The Executive Director serves as the primary business leader in a collaborative leadership model alongside a high-performing staff and dedicated Board of Directors. This position focuses on strategic planning, business operations, fundraising, and organizational sustainability while honoring our rich legacy and ensuring future growth.


Perry-Mansfield is currently navigating a critical financial phase. While funding is secured for the Executive Director role, long-term sustainability requires strategic repositioning of our revenue model, innovative fundraising, and rigorous financial stewardship. The Board seeks a leader with vision, creativity, and determination to guide the organization through this pivotal time.


Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Operations

  • Work closely with a volunteer Board of Directors to develop and implement long-term strategic plans honoring Perry-Mansfield's mission while ensuring fiscal sustainability
  • Provide oversight of all business operations in partnership with department heads
  • Lead transformative initiatives to reimagine Perry-Mansfield’s business and programming model, balancing legacy preservation with innovation and modernization


Financial Management & Fundraising

  • Develop and implement a plan to evaluate, reposition and manage the nonprofit’s varied resources to elevate the organization's health and reputation
  • Identify opportunities for revenue diversification by exploring and implementing innovative funding models
  • Provide strategic oversight of financial operations and ensure fiscal integrity
  • Lead successful fundraising efforts including major donor cultivation, capital campaigns, grants, sponsorships and planned giving
  • Work with the Board for budget approval and long-term financial planning 


Team Leadership & Board Relations

  • Build and manage high-performing team including Development, Marketing, Facilities, Theater, Dance, and Program Directors 
  • Serve as primary liaison between staff and Board of Directors
  • Attend all board meetings and provide comprehensive operational reports
  • Increase organizational capacity by cultivating volunteer resources 
  • Take direction from the Board regarding strategic vision and policy, while being accountable for the organization's performance


Community & External Relations

  • Serve as primary spokesperson for Perry-Mansfield's business operations 
  • Develop relationships with community leaders, partners, and industry associations to elevate the organization’s profile 
  • Activate alumni engagement strategies and community outreach to maximize impact


Property & Facilities Management

  • Oversee Perry-Mansfield's 74-acre historic property and rustic structures to reflect the camp's history and connection to the natural environment
  • Maintain camp’s unique atmosphere as a Historic District through preservation of the land and restoration of the structures 
  • Ensure alignment with historic preservation goals, the unique spirit of the land and safety standards 
  • Coordinate, implement and oversee seasonal operations, deferred maintenance strategies and resource allocation


Required Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred in nonprofit management, business, or related field
  • Minimum 5+ years senior nonprofit or corporate management experience
  • Experience in collaborative leadership models strongly preferred
  • Background in arts organizations, performing arts, seasonal camps, or educational institutions highly valued
  • Property/facilities management experience preferred

  • Proven track record in nonprofit financial management and major gift fundraising
  • Demonstrated success in entrepreneurial leadership, navigating complex challenges with creativity and resilience
  • Experience with capital campaigns and donor relationship management
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and public speaking ability
  • Experience working effectively with boards of directors
  • Exceptional knowledge of HR best practices and nonprofit governance
  • Ability to inspire & motivate diverse groups including staff, campers, parents, board members, volunteers, and artists
