Summary
The Exhibits & Programs Department at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is seeking a Public Engagement & Partnerships Assistant. This position helps to foster deeper relationships with the Yard’s external community and plays a key role in helping the organization attract, sustain, and grow audiences. This role supports three main areas: events support, outreach and engagement support, and administrative support. This position reports to the Director, Special Events & Partnerships, but also works closely with the entire Exhibits & Programs department and members of the External Affairs team.
As the Yard expands its creative placemaking and public engagement strategies, the person in this role acts as a front-line ambassador for the organization and often engages directly with a variety of outside stakeholders, partners, and clients. Under events support, this person helps to schedule and lead site visits for potential clients, oversees communications and the creation of agreements for clients and vendors, and works between departments to help prepare for special requests and programmatic partnerships. Assisting with outreach and promotions also plays a large role in this position, specifically ensuring that updated events decks, sponsorship decks, and other promotional materials are available as well as taking the lead of departmental communications, including social media and newsletter creation. Lastly, a large part of this role is tied to administrative tasks and responsibilities, notably keeping detailed data on special events and partnerships, updating internal calendars, processing invoices, and updating department presentations.
This is a great entry-level position ideal for someone who is highly organized and detail-oriented who enjoys working with people and fostering partnerships with diverse communities. Strong customer service skills and excellent communication skills a must.
The Exhibits & Programs Department celebrates the creative, innovative, and industrial legacy of the Yard through a series of public programs, tours, exhibitions, public art projects, and special events that emphasize the continued economic and cultural impact of the Yard. This is achieved by providing on-site businesses and creative workers a platform to share their diverse talents and brands, cultivating sustainable community partnerships, developing projects that activate the site and make it accessible, and building a shared sense of value and belonging.
Areas of Responsibility
Events Support
Schedule and lead site visits for potential clients and partners; Includes keeping calendars and shared drives updated
Oversee communications and the creation of agreements for clients and vendors
Work between departments on coordinating event set up/break down (coordinating internal events logistical management)
Liaise with departments on the coordination of partnership programs (e.g. confirming BNYDC staff representation on a partner panel, etc)
Be present for events on-site; Be staff liaison for clients during event set up, which includes troubleshooting
Support Exhibits & Programs events as needed
Outreach & Engagement
Conduct research on key constituencies and help to identify growth areas to attract new audiences to the Yard
Develop strategies to increase contact lists and outreach lists
Support the updating and creation of marketing and promotional materials
Prepare department social media posts and Mailchimp newsletters
Ensure buildings and digital signage around the Yard is updated with upcoming initiatives, which include posting flyers, dropping of postcards, updating flatscreens at Building 77, etc.
Support other outreach and promotional initiatives as needed
Administrative Support
Help to prepare department presentations, infographics, and other materials for various stakeholders
Create visitor surveys and track data on visitor feedback and experience
Conduct research on audience trends, including preparing reports on the department’s impact

Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
At least two years of experience in a customer service or client-facing role
At least two years of experience in administrative support, including expertise with Microsoft Office
Experience In a Fast-paced Nonprofit Environment Preferred
Physically capable of standing for extended periods of time, and lift up to 30 lb
