THE POSITION

With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the State of California with the ability to report to Sacramento-based physical worksites daily if required.
The ideal candidate for the position of Curator of History at the Center for Sacramento History will have the following:
- A master’s degree in History or Museum Studies (although not required)
- A minimum of three years’ experience developing exhibitions.
- Strong research skills
- Experience with the care and handling of historic artifacts.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Experience with public speaking.
- Experience working with diverse community groups.
- A knowledge of Past Perfect or other collection management data bases.
- The ability to work independently but also with exhibition teams.
- A knowledge of the American Alliance of Museums standards for professional museums.
- Experience in overall organization and management of a history collection including collection development, acquisitions, and deaccessions.
- Experience in developing multi-year exhibition schedule.
- Working with other staff to develop policies and procedures for museum collection and exhibitions.
- Experience supervising curatorial staff, interns and volunteers.
Under general direction of the History and Science Manager, a Curator of History performs specialized, professional work involving the storage, preservation, presentation, and research of the Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Centers (SAMCC) artifact collection. The curator will oversee care of artifacts and their use in public exhibitions, and will work to enhance the SAMCC’s educational and public programs to better serve the communities in the Sacramento region.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Curator of History is distinguished from the Curator of Art in that the former requires specialized training in history, artifact care, and exhibitions. Their duties center on the three-dimensional artifact collection at the SAMCC and the enhancement and care of these materials as well as extensive community outreach and programming and exhibitions.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
General direction and administrative supervision is provided by the History and Science Manager at the SAMCC. Responsibilities include the direct and indirect supervision of professional, technical, and clerical staff.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Develop plans for and supervise the history exhibitions in Sacramento government buildings and other public spaces; coordinate and supervise the physical installation of artifacts, including object placement and the care and preservation of pieces.
- Research, identify, classify, and write didactic material relating to exhibitions including object lists, labels, copy for membership newsletter, gallery guides, and/or other materials; conduct research in connection with identifying and describing objects in the collections.
- Plan and develop public and educational programs for the SAMCC in conjunction with the History and Science Manager.
- Plan and organize loan exhibitions; meet with collectors, community groups, and members of the public to discuss potential exhibitions; view collections, solicit potential gifts, and make recommendations for acquisition.
- Train, supervise, and coordinate activities of subordinate personnel and volunteers.
- Act as the liaison to local community groups, developing programs and exhibitions in these communities.
- Provide exceptional customer service to those contacted in the course of work.
- Other related duties may also be performed.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- History museums and archives and their role in the educational and cultural life of the community.
- Organization and practices in a modern history museum or archival facility.
- Thorough knowledge of Western history and the history of the City of Sacramento.
- Techniques in presentation, selection, evaluation, preservations, and conservation of historical artifacts and related materials.
- Principles of organization, administration, supervision and performance evaluation.
- Ability to communicate easily with a wide range of individuals and groups.
- Ability to work with grade school through high school groups and college level classes.
- Understanding of California State curriculum for teaching California history.
Skill in:
- Effective oral and written presentation.
- Use of computers and computer applications and software.
Ability to:
- Initiate, plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate various activities of a history museum and archival facility.
- Conduct research on historic questions.
- Discover potential exhibitions.
- Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports and correspondence.
Experience
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Three years of professional level curator experience working with museum and/or archival collections. Included in the three years of required experience should be at least one year of experience developing public programs and working with community groups and at least one year must include serving in a supervisory capacity.
Education
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in history or a closely related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
Substitution
A Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, museum studies, public history or a closely related field may be substitute for up to one year of the required experience.

P roof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.
An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.
Special Qualifications
Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
