Position Summary
The Media Relations Intern will directly support the communications team's work to pitch and host journalists and generate positive editorial coverage of Washington, DC. The intern will gain dedicated experience across domestic, international and trade communications verticals.
Duties/Responsibilities May Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Prepare media pitches with timely content including current events, holidays, F&B trends, museum exhibitions, etc.
- Build media itineraries based on targeted pitches and angles
- Create and update media lists using media software Cision
- Upload PR member benefits (including media itineraries) into CRM software (Simpleview)
- Draft content for quarterly journalist newsletter
- Draft trade content for website and advertorials
- Research editorial calendars for long-lead pitching
- Assist with monthly and quarterly media in-kind reports
- Assist with tracking and quantifying media coverage
- Attend weekly company-wide and team meetings as well as monthly departmental meetings
- Administrative tasks including press kit preparation and media gift deliveries
- Research as needed
- Audit internal press materials
Qualifications: Experience, Competencies, Education:
- Completed at least one year of college; focus on communications or relevant coursework required
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Good organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Demonstrated interest in the travel and tourism economy, enthusiasm for Washington, DC
- Eagerness to learn from a team of dynamic, engaged professionals working to promote Washington, DC and its vital hospitality and travel and tourism economy
- Must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19
Duration
- Commitment of one semester is required. The internship may be continued for a second semester upon agreement
- Interns must commit at least 15-20 hours per week to DDC; 2-3 days/week (DDC is currently working 2-3 days in the office)
Compensation
- Course Credit plus Weekly Stipend of $200 or $18.00/hour
- Destination DC will work with intern to complete the paperwork and reports necessary to obtain school credit
