Purpose of Role:
This position is responsible for supporting the Molecular Foundry’s communications and public relations/outreach efforts to raise the visibility of the Foundry. The Molecular Foundry is a Department of Energy-funded nanoscience research facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that provides users from around the world with access to cutting-edge expertise and instrumentation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. Communications efforts at the Foundry aim to convey the breadth of scientific output from our facility to our various stakeholders (Congress, DOE, academia, public) in order to raise awareness, understanding, and demand.
This position reports to the Deputy Director of the Molecular Foundry. Notes:
· The Science Communications and Outreach specialist is expected to work approximately 25% time for 3-5 months, reporting to the Deputy Director of the Molecular Foundry. An appointment up to 50% could be considered depending on the applicant’s skills and level of interest.
· A hybrid work schedule is allowed for this position; working on-site at the Molecular Foundry is encouraged.
· The appointment with the Molecular Foundry begins in the spring with flexible start and end dates; aiming to start in April through August.
Duties:
· Coordinate (e.g., work with the Energy Sciences Area office, Berkeley Lab strategic communications and creative services office,
Foundry scientists and users) the preparation of written news articles about Foundry research
o Work with Foundry contract writers on internal news briefs (it is possible for the incumbent to participate in science writing with prior experience)
o Coordinate with the ESA office on major news releases
o Prepare communications for posting on the Foundry’s website
· Work with Deputy Director to draft science highlights for DOE.
· Update the Molecular Foundry website with new content and maintain posted information.
· Coordinate, prepare, and distribute the Foundry newsletter.
· Coordinate the Foundry Seminar Series; lead outreach/advertising efforts.
· Assist in organizing tours of the Molecular Foundry.
