Position Focus
Reporting to the assistant vice president of internal communications, the editor of Your Yale is responsible for leading the teams that create content across multiple digital channels — email newsletter, digital signage, video, photography, social media, and the It’s Your Yale website. This editor relies on research and insights to develop a content strategy that a) amplifies the president’s and campus’s operational priorities b) informs and inspires the Yale community; c) attracts the finest talent in the world to join the institution; d) engages and retains Yale’s existing talent across the staff community. In addition to leading the editorial team within Internal Communications, this position works closely with the Director of Recognition and Engagement and the Director of Strategic Communication to support their editorial needs.

Establish an editorial strategy for OPAC Internal Communications that connects presidential priorities with insights on Yale’s staff members. Build and manage a “beat” structure for writers. Lead the creation of editorial calendars, to be maintained daily by a key staffer on the team. Set high standards for OPAC writing; work closely with writers to ensure those standards are met. Manage a powerful flow of content from It’s Your Yale, to email newsletter and other digital assets. Write features and other stories as needed for Your Yale weekly newsletter. Ensure excellence in video, photography, and illustration across platforms. Collaborate closely with peers to ensure strategic messaging consistency, as well as excellence across platforms and content. Manage and mentor members of the editorial staff to set individual goals and development plans. Maintain organizational and resource balance, including identifying budgeting and hiring needs proactively. Convene writers and editors from other parts of Yale who are involved in internal communications to a) ensure Yale’s main staff-focused editorial platforms feature excellent content from across the university, and b) offer guidance to producers of editorial content featured on non-OPAC platforms across the university. Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Essential Duties
- Manage/lead a team of writers based in the Yale Office of Public Affairs & Communications. 2. Work closely with a team of fellow editors, media relations officers, videographer-photographers and visual artists, plus production personnel, to ensure that all stories publish on time and with visual appeal. 3. Ensure all work follows editorial policies and meets the highest standards. 4. Identify work produced by other writers and content generators within Yale that merits amplification through OPAC’s media channels. 5. Keep careful track of the status, flow and availability of content, in coordination with other members of the editorial team. 6. Write original stories for publication in Yale-owned media, sometimes on short notice. 7. Manage and mentor writers, set individual goals and development plans. 8. Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Required Education And Experience
Bachelor’s degree. Seven years of professional editorial experience, including significant work in daily news or other fast-paced, deadline-rich editorial environments, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
