Job Description
Location:
New York, NY
SELF produces science-backed, human-focused content our audience can trust. When it comes to talking about health on the internet, we know that there can be a lot of scary, conflicting, or surface-level explanations for all those questions in a person’s search history. We’re not here to fearmonger, judge, or gloss over the facts; we’re here to inform, motivate, and maybe even entertain you. We do that by focusing on four key brand values: inclusivity, accuracy, empathy, and autonomy.
SELF is seeking a Director of Editorial Operations to support the day-to-day operations of its editorial team. The ideal candidate is extremely organized, detail-oriented, collaborative, and a great communicator, and has experience with digital media production, project management, and business operations. You should feel comfortable balancing multiple tasks and take pride in supporting a team’s everyday functions. A bonus: You’re interested in health, fitness, and lifestyle journalism, and have an appreciation for wellness trends but don’t mess around with pseudoscience. This position is based in New York and reports to the Editor-in-Chief.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage the editorial calendar and production workflow to ensure all deadlines are met in service of SELF’s broader KPIs
- Oversee editorial budgets, expensing, invoicing, and all aspects of contractor and third-party payments, and work closely with finance to ensure editorial operations remain in budget
- Support the editor-in-chief, creative director, executive editor, and special projects director with planning, logistics, and execution of cover stories, awards franchises, and other special projects, including photo shoots
- Serve as a general point person for advising on and implementing SELF and Condé’s employee and office policies in support of directors and other lead editors
- Partner with the Executive Editor to facilitate ongoing communication across the editorial team, central functions, and various company divisions to ensure work is happening in sync and is delivered on time
- Maintain effective staff communication and serve as a resource for the editorial staff to help resolve challenges swiftly
- Act as key liaison to legal for business deal negotiation and contractor agreements, and negotiate contracts with freelancers and contributing editors as needed in partnership with the SELF directors
- Work with the product team in collaboration with the editor-in-chief on implementation of site enhancements, fixes, and special projects
- As time allows, work with audience development and editorial teams to refine and implement SEO, newsletter, and social media growth strategies including engagement, audience-building tactics, and special initiatives
- Review editorial copy at times when needed
- As needed, collaborate with sales teams and consumer marketing to optimize advertising proposals
Requirements:
- 7+ years experience in digital editorial environments; ideally 4+ years in a management/leadership role
- Experience working closely with finance and/or legal departments on contracts and budgets
- Ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues and teams across an organization, including problem-solving and decision-making skills in situations involving several departments and key stakeholders
- Knowledge of the latest/emerging digital tools, platforms, etc., especially with regard to work communication and project management
- A proven track record of sound judgment, problem-solving and decision-making ability in situations involving many departments, leaders, and key stakeholders
- Fluency in digital best practices, from SEO to social media to headline and caption writing
- Experience with and enthusiasm for quality service and lifestyle journalism, digital media, different revenue models, and centralized operations is strongly desired
The expected base salary range for this position is from $86,000 -$150,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
