Philo is looking for a strategic Marketing Lead to build a world-class marketing function responsible for sharing the Philo story with the world, helping drive our zero-to-one ideation and validation efforts, and supporting our portfolio companies in their ongoing marketing strategy development and implementation. This will be an exciting and dynamic role, key to the success of Philo and its portfolio companies, with the opportunity for significant personal upside associated with portfolio company success.
The Role:
This role is a strategic early hire for Philo, intended to accelerate Philo’s pace of product ideation, validation, and successful launch. The Marketing Lead will drive marketing efforts at both Philo and its portfolio companies, with management of external resources, critical input into portfolio company strategy, and the responsibility for bringing marketing innovation and best practices into all that we do. In addition to a track record of leading successful go-to-market efforts for new products, the successful candidate will have a passion for creating value through entrepreneurial efforts, creative problem-solving, strategic thinking extending beyond the traditional limits of the marketing purview, and effectively communicating strategy to influence executive decision-making.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and effectively communicate the Philo brand within relevant entrepreneurship, venture capital, and venture studio ecosystems.
- Support and participate in new opportunity ideation and validation efforts.
- Partner with project leads and founders-in-residence in ensuring product-market fit, optimizing go-to-market strategies, and ensuring competitive positioning.
- Drive development and adoption of marketing best practices, frameworks, templates and tools throughout studio and portfolio comp.
- Act as a strategic partner and advisor to both studio and portfolio company leadership, creating value wherever and however possible.
- Support Philo efforts to continually improve internal activities and processes, facilitating efficient ideation, validation, launch, and growth.
- Define, track, and report on marketing metrics for studio; assist portfolio company founders-in-residence in the same for their respective companies.
- Foster and oversee work of a roster of high-caliber contractors supporting studio and portfolio-level marketing efforts.
- Manage MVS external communications, including PR relationships, website, and potential blog/newsletter/social media and similar communications.
- Oversee studio and portfolio company marketing team buildout as needed.
- Help shape the strategic direction of the venture studio model.
- Actively contribute to new business ideation and development.
Required Qualifications & Capabilities:
- Passion for 0 to 1 innovation and excitement for the opportunity to work with several new businesses in diverse industries at any given time.
- Marketing experience in an early-stage environment and growth/later-stage environments, offering a solid understanding of the stages of company and marketing strategy development.
- Familiarity with marketing methods, tools, and best practices across all aspects of marketing, and the ability to implement or guide implementation of such, appropriate to the needs of early and growth-stage entities.
- Deep familiarity with either product marketing or digital marketing methods, tools, and best practices.
- An analytical approach to decision making, with strong market research & data analysis methods and tools.
- Experience developing and implementing marketing mix strategies.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, organization, and analytical skills.
- Bias for action and comfort with a fast-paced startup environment.
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to pivot quickly in a fast-moving early-stage environment.
