The Boston Herald is seeking an Assistant Digital Editor's to drive the visibility and traction of Herald content – from News to Sports and everything in between – across the array of digital media platforms while always looking to innovate. Come join our team!
What You Will Do
- Forming a social media strategy
- Being the in-house expert on newsletters and alerts and training others on how to use the tools
- Tracking industry-wide developments in digital strategy and communicating with editors and writers to develop best practices
- Writing stories daily on business/tech news
- Identification of staff content that can be optimized for digital platforms; for instance leveraging Herald photography on Instagram to drive traffic back to bostonherald.com
- The Asst. Digital Editor reports directly to the Executive Editor and works closely with all the other editors and reporters as a team
- The Sunday-Thursday shift begins with slotting all homepage sections of bostonherald.com – before the morning peak traffic at 7:30 a.m. – using the WordPress admin system and basing the position of homepage stories on a mix of analytics and news value
- Just as vital is compiling the Herald’s “Morning Memo” newsletter and delivering it to subscribers prior to 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., depending on reader preference, open rates and other analytics
- These vital tasks are followed by overseeing the posting of Herald content to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and any other platform that may pop up both by hand manually and using Social Flow
- Other newsletters, especially the Breaking News and Don’t Miss newsletters, are key responsibilities of the job, too, these alerts along with the mobile App Alerts drive readers to the site and fall under Digital duties
- Collaborating with the company on posting wire stories using the WordPress Hub View portal – and MNG/Tribune content also in that queue – is also part of the job
- Business/Technology wire and Tribune/MNG news can also be repurposed for the Herald both for online and print products
- Basically, if news breaks, the Herald needs to alert readers quickly, the Asst. Digital Editor must have a passion for digital journalism, social media engagement and business/tech news

- Since this position aligns with Business/Technology, the candidate will also need to have a journalist’s instincts and create and post content for the web and paper on a regular basis
- AP Newsroom is the source of wire content and with a lot being posted, the Digital editor can focus on slotting it on the website for maximum effectiveness
- This position also requires working with writers and editors to develop and execute SEO best practices, digital coverage of both live and breaking content, and helping with long-form content and collaborating with the staff as only a digital lead can do
- The digital strategist is also the Herald’s representative in company meetings, where brainstorming and best practices are shared
- Other meetings will include planning sessions with cluster Herald leaders, from the publisher on down
