The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is an economic development entity of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian Region. ARC’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the Region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. ARC’s Communications team works to connect as many people as possible with ARC's grant opportunities, critical research, and inspiring success stories.
Position Summary:
ARC seeks a highly organized and collaborative team player to join our Communications team as a
Content Writer/Strategist to work as a compelling storyteller serving as our lead writer for all forms of ARC digital content. Working with the communications team, this position will strategize, develop, produce, and project manage the development of web content, ARC’s weekly e-newsletter, promotional toolkits, press releases, programmatic information, and other materials to amplify ARC’s mission, grantees, research, and more. This position will collaborate with ARC staff, federal office, states, grantees, partners, and others to source relevant material – including project details and contacts, photos, videos, and more – for public dissemination. This position reports to the Manager, Digital Strategy.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong writing skills in both proactive and reactive situations; professional experience researching and developing original content across a variety of public messaging platforms; effective ability to develop content with short turn-around time.
- Ability to strategize, analyze, and implement effective and relevant improvements, enhancements, and strategies in the digital content space.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with programmatic staff in their efforts to use digital communication tools in alignment with the program objectives.
- Core competencies: accountability, adaptability, collaboration, communication, and critical analysis
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment bringing an energetic and innovative approach to work.
- Bachelor’s degree in writing, journalism, communications, or a related area.
- Ability to travel (up to 15%) and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion (prior to hire) & maintenance of background security review; U.S. citizenship required.

ARC generally follows the General Schedule Salary Table of the Federal government. ARC’s grades denoted by “NF” are equivalent to the federal grade(s) on the GS chart.
