Position: Reference Archivist
Location: Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, Youngstown, OH
Status: Part Time, permanent (16 hours per week)
Salary: $20.00 - 22.00/hr

About Ohio History Connection
The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.
Position Summary
Provides customer service to researchers using the collections of the Archives & Library in person, via email, written correspondence, and by phone. The position will also assist with collection acquisitions, conservation activities, and outreach activities. The Reference Archivist is a patron-oriented position.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Provides specialized reference services to Archives & Library visitors via email, phone, and the Reference Desk and Microfilm Room.
- Leads Archives and library collection maintenance projects such as processing collections.
- Arrange and describe archival collections according to DACS.
- Create inventories of existing materials and collections.
- Contributes to outreach activities such as tours, presentations, workshops, and webinars promoting Archives/Library collections and services.
- Supports the organization's communications activities by writing blogs, newsletter articles, and other communications.
- Experience drafting research guides and creating LibGuides.
- Support retrieving requested materials and re-shelving materials to the closed stacks or Research Room.
- Supervises volunteers and interns who process print collections or assist with requests.
- Participates in professional activities and organizations.
- Serves on committees and teams as assigned
Education And Experience
- Undergraduate degree in history, American studies, library science, or equivalent work experience plus three to five years of experience in archives, special collections, or libraries.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Experience with grant writing and grant management.
- Knowledge of best practices for handling and storage of archives.
- Experience processing and cataloging archival collections with ArchivesSpace or similar archives management software.
- Demonstrated understanding of MARC, DACS, and EAD
- Familiarity with an archival collection management database such as ArchivesSpace, Worldshare, and discovery layers.
- Demonstrate ability to collaborate with outside partners and internal stakeholders.
- Experience in research and writing on historical topics.
- Experience in developing educational resources or presentations and teaching with primary sources.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
Required Competencies
- Ability to review potential deaccessions and acquisitions and make a professional recommendation regarding disposition.
- Work independently and in support of a team of curators, archivists, and collections managers to complete work; set priorities and appropriate boundaries to fully focus on projects with clarity and a feeling of accomplishment.
- Ability to work with a high degree of initiative, prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work well with minimum supervision.
- Advocate for the Archives Services collections and staff within and outside the organization.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including an excellent grasp of grammar and punctuation.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment (aligned with organizational best practices) in internal and external communications.
- Ability to delegate work appropriately.
