The
Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is seeking a
Policy Intern (HIVMA). IDSA represents over 12,000 physicians, scientists and public health experts who specialize in infectious diseases. Our mission is to improve the health of individuals, communities, and society by promoting excellence in patient care, education, research, public health, and prevention relating to infectious diseases. The
Policy Intern will assist the HIVMA team in advancing HIVMA’s policy priorities. The Policy Intern will support HIVMA’s grassroots advocacy program and day-to-day legislative activities needed to advance federal legislative goals, including but not limited to:
- Tracking, monitoring, researching, and preparing policy and advocacy documents on relevant HIV legislation
- Submitting and tracking congressional appropriations forms for key programs
- Research policies impacting health care professionals working in HIV medicine and their patients
- Assist with executing member advocacy events.
At the conclusion of the Policy Intern’s term, they will have increased their knowledge of federal policies and programs affecting people with HIV and at higher risk for HIV, including the federal Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, the federal appropriations process, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and in addition to issues affecting the HIV workforce. The Policy Intern also will increase their understanding of the federal legislative process, including the appropriations process.
Fall Internship Term: mid-August early December
Spring Internship Term: mid-January end of May
This is a
paid internship.
Qualifications
Characteristic Essential Responsibilities
- Support the implementation of strategies to advance policy priorities, through the member grassroots program and other activities
- Research and write issue and advocacy-related newsletter articles and briefs on issues related to the HIV epidemic and other relevant public health issues
- Assist in the preparation for HIVMA member advocacy days
- Attend virtual/in-person Congressional hearings, Hill meetings and coalition meetings
- Prepare briefing materials, draft correspondence and social media messaging
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

- In the process of receiving a Bachelor or Masters degree in political science, public policy, health or other relevant areas of study
- Basic knowledge of the legislative process and interest in advancing responsible HIV/AIDS public policy
- Ideal candidate will have previous congressional experience.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and
- Google Apps (Gmail, Google Docs and Drive)
Additional Qualifications: (Such as certifications, industry-specific experience and the experience working with certain equipment)
- Interest in working with an HIV/AIDS public health organization
- Interest in working within a diverse work environment
Travel Requirements
- This internship has the option to be fully remote or in-person in our Arlington, VA office.
