Project Summary

This position is part of the NBA Social & Digital Content team which focuses on identifying, creating, distributing and publishing content to the NBA's social and digital platforms and its many domestic and international partners throughout the world. As the demand for content on the NBA's social platforms continues to grow, this is your opportunity to grow with us in a fast-paced, innovative and collaborative environment, reaching over 100M fans around the world.

The Project Employee Newsletter and Copyeditor position will be a core member of the NBA’s new newsletter, The Starting 5, while also providing senior editorial oversight and guidance for the NBA’s Direct To Consumer Team (App, Notifications, Graphics) in a nightly, live-game environment.

This is a temporary position with an expected duration not to exceed (10) months.

Major Responsibilities

  • Copyediting & Quality Assurance
    • Make sure all copy is correct/factual, timely and compelling
    • Ensuring every word, image and experience inside of our
    • Making sure everything abides by NBA editorial standards
  • Daily Publishing
    • Build daily newsletter editions, with an eye for compelling design, readability and experience
    • Develop sharp publishing/production process
  • Content Planning
    • Working with teams around the NBA to source content & storylines to make our newsletter best-in-class
  • Daily copywriting, copyediting and QA for our Starting 5 newsletter and select experiences across NBA Direct to Consumer Content, ensuring that all products meet our quality standards
  • Proofreading content to ensure accuracy, readability, brand voice and consistency in tone
  • Daily execution & publication of the Starting 5 daily newsletter
  • Developing a style guide and content best practices, in tandem with Starting 5 newsletter team
  • Rigorous, detailed fact-checking, proofing and editing of everything in Starting 5
  • Forward-looking content planning, with a goal of surprising and delighting fans with NBA storytelling around key storylines
  • Coordination with groups around the league to curate the best work across NBA content
  • Coordination with groups around the league to promote the best of the newsletter & select experiences, across social, mobile messaging and more

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • At least 5-7 years of professional, high-level editing & execution experience on behalf of a brand – ideally in sports – in a real-time environment
  • Expertise and understanding of best practices across digital (app, website) and social platforms
  • Deeply knowledgeable and passionate about the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League, Jr NBA Global Championship, and the Basketball Africa League and their players, coaches, and teams
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices, along with digital analytics core KPIs
  • Proven, sustained success in precise copyediting, establishing best practices and teaching/mentoring a team of writers, contributors and publishers
  • Experience in publishing from a Content Management System
  • Deeply knowledgeable and curious about the direct-to-consumer landscape
  • Deeply knowledgeable about social & digital platforms, especially in terms of segmentation & targeting.
  • Experience in publishing from a Content Management System, especially Wordpress
  • Knowledge of basketball analytics and the rules of the game. Strong writing and communication skills, as well as ability to execute editorial judgment
  • Ability and willingness to work on deadline and handle multiple tasks at once with a precise and detail-oriented approach Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team
  • This position will require occasional travel, as well as night & weekend work
  • You understand digital analytics & trends to know the best types of content to use on respective platforms
  • You have experience working on deadline and in an intense, collaborative environment

Educational Background Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field preferred

Salary Range: $2,307.69 bi-weekly
