Position Summary
The Memory Care Director serves as the champion of person-centered dementia care within the community. This highly visible leadership position combines resident engagement, family support, program development, team leadership, and operational oversight to ensure exceptional experiences for residents living with cognitive impairment.
The Memory Care Director partners with the Executive Director, Health & Wellness Director, department leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to create a vibrant, supportive, and purposeful environment while maintaining high standards of care and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Resident Engagement & Neighborhood Presence
- Maintain a consistent and visible presence throughout the Memory Care neighborhood.
- Build meaningful relationships with residents through daily interaction, observation, and engagement.
- Promote individualized approaches that honor each resident's history, preferences, strengths, and abilities.
- Lead and support resident engagement programming and meaningful activity opportunities.
- Monitor resident quality of life and identify opportunities to enhance resident experiences and neighborhood culture.
- Conduct ongoing observations of residents and communicate changes in physical, emotional, cognitive, or psychosocial well-being to appropriate team members.
- Collaborate with the Health & Wellness Director to support individualized care plans and behavioral support strategies.
Program Leadership & Operations
- Create and build the monthly newsletter and calendar.
- Work with Entertainment vendors for monthly Events.
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve all aspects of the Memory Care Program.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and company regulations, policies, and dementia care standards.
- Evaluate resident needs, industry trends, regulatory requirements, and operational opportunities to strengthen program outcomes.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of dementia programming and resident engagement initiatives.
- Develop systems and workflows that support operational excellence and resident-centered service.
- Participate in departmental budgeting, inventory management, and resource planning. Gather supplies for monthly events.
- Complete and oversee required documentation, assessments, service plans, and resident records.
Family Relations & Support
- Serve as a trusted resource, advocate, and specialists in cognitive impaired.
- Support Health & Wellness with families care plans
- Build strong relationships with family members through ongoing communication and support.
- Facilitate Memory Café and support group via monthly event.
- Provide dementia education, caregiver support, and disease progression guidance.
- Assist families in understanding effective communication techniques and care approaches.
- Support prospective resident assessments, family consultations, and move-in planning when applicable.
Team Leadership, Staffing & Education
- Mentor, supervise, and evaluate with Health & Wellness the wellness team.
- Recruit, mentor, supervise, Activities Coordinators and Driver for outings
- Coordinate staffing schedules and ensure appropriate staffing levels in accordance with company standards and state regulations.
- Conduct orientation and onboarding for new team members.
- Develop and lead ongoing dementia-specific education and competency training programs.
- Provide real-time coaching regarding dementia care approaches, communication techniques, behavioral interventions, and person-centered care practices.
- Identify educational gaps and implement training initiatives to improve team member confidence and competency.
- Foster a culture of accountability, compassion, teamwork, growth, and service excellence.
- Partner with department leaders to ensure dementia-focused practices are integrated throughout the community.
Dementia Care Leadership
- Serve as the community's subject matter expert in dementia care and cognitive wellness.
- Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based dementia care practices, research, and industry trends.
- Develop and implement innovative initiatives that enhance resident outcomes and family experiences.
- Promote a philosophy of dignity, autonomy, purpose, and meaningful engagement.
- Monitor resident behavioral expressions and collaborate with clinical leadership on interventions and support strategies.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and quality improvement initiatives.
Community Outreach & Partnership Development
- Build and maintain relationships with community organizations and dementia-related resources.
- Serve as the community liaison with organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association, dementia advocacy groups, research institutions, healthcare providers, hospitals, and community partners.
- Represent the community at educational events, support groups, conferences, and outreach opportunities.
- Assist with marketing efforts, community tours, and prospective family education regarding the community's dementia care philosophy.
- Support census development and referral relationships.
Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Maintain a safe, secure, and supportive environment for residents, team members, and guests.
- Participate in surveys, inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and company policies and procedures.
- Coordinate safety initiatives and special accommodations for residents with cognitive and physical challenges.
- Participate in emergency preparedness, fire safety, and risk management activities.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Associate degree or higher in Gerontology, Nursing, Social Work, Human Services, Healthcare, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience providing residential care to older adults; dementia care experience strongly preferred.
- Leadership or supervisory experience in assisted living, memory care, senior living, or healthcare preferred.
- Strong knowledge of dementia care principles and person-centered care practices.
- Excellent communication, coaching, relationship-building, and presentation skills.
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role and complete required health screenings.
- Current First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Must successfully pass all required background screenings.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
