Objective

The County Youth Coordinator provides assistance to Iowa State University Extension & Outreach (ISUEO) in Bremer County and to the Bremer County Extension Council for organization and delivery of 4-H positive youth development programming. Program delivery modes include clubs, camps, school, events, and after-school programming in conjunction with office responsibilities, volunteer management, building partnerships, and managing resources. The position requires knowledge and adherence of ISU Extension and Outreach and Iowa 4-H policies and guidelines.

Responsibilities

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT/MAINTENANCE:

  • Develop the annual Bremer County 4-H Action Plan and deliver programs for K-12 youth audiences to include in-school and afterschool programs, day camps, overnight trips, workshops, etc.
  • Develop and initiate county recruitment and retention strategy for youth audiences according to county and state goals
  • Support local program scheduling and delivery
  • Implement educational programs designed by professional staff
  • Provide leadership for ensuring 4-H materials are ordered, organized, and distributed
  • Assist with computerized youth enrollment program. Maintain appropriate records and prepare reports
  • Evaluate programs and assist in compiling data/preparing year-end reports
  • Organize and deliver county and multi-county/regional 4-H events and activities with volunteers and other staff
  • Assist in registration, recruitment and/or correspondence for regional and state events and opportunities such as regional camps, National 4-H Conference, State Conference, State Council selection, Animal Science Roundup, and State Awards selection
  • Coordinate volunteer and project trainings for county
  • Provide leadership in planning, implementation, and delegating of 4-H/FFA responsibilities at the Bremer County Fair
  • Utilize assistance of summer staff as needed
  • Fiscal responsibility in managing programs/events within county youth development budget. Serve as lead contact for county/local fundraising efforts
  • Work with county youth development team and Extension Council to complete youth program needs assessment

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT:

  • Develop a local recruitment and retention strategy to recruit diverse pool of volunteers to support county program
  • Assure volunteer compliance with state 4-H policies including screening, orientating, training, recognizing and evaluating volunteers for various roles and activities
  • Provide leadership for the Bremer County Youth Advisory Committee, 4-H Youth County Council, Bremer County Extension District Council, Fair Board (per MOU with fair board), and all aspects of the county 4-H program

Communications & External Relationships

  • Coordinate and maintain regular correspondence with 4-H members, volunteers, committees, Extension support staff, and the public. This will include news releases, newsletter, emails, and postings to social media outlets, etc.
  • Prepare monthly youth/CYC work report for Extension Council (Present Youth Program report to Extension Council)
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other Extension and community groups, agencies, and organizations
  • Gather promotional information for development of program fliers and posters for programs, activities, events, and recruitment, in coordination with office staff
  • Showcase ISU Extension & Outreach and 4-H as a credible source of information and resource utilizing research-based curriculum

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT:

  • Utilize Youth Advisory Committee and to secure public/private program and financial support

  • Communicate weekly and monthly work schedule with supervisor (and Extension staff as appropriate)
  • Work with ISU Extension Youth Program Specialist to identify and attend mandatory training sessions. Monitor daily work for adherence to policies/procedures and promptly correct deficiencies
  • Cross-train to know the basics of county-paid staff’s support work
  • Other duties as determined in conjunction with the Extension Council

Qualifications

  • Related experience to the position
  • Experience equivalent to one year of full-time employment
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Employment contingent on successful background screening

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree
  • Knowledge and experience in 4-H
  • Experience with K-12 grade youth and volunteer management
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software, and social media outlets

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Position accountabilities are typically performed indoors in an office setting, in large public meeting spaces, livestock facilities, and natural outdoor settings with adults and youth of all ages

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds individually and other physical activities as necessary; including but not limited to bending, stooping, kneeling and climbing
