How You’ll Contribute

The NGS Internal Communications team supports the Society by building an informed, engaged and inclusive community of employees, and provides strategic communications support for the Society’s CEO and Senior Leadership Team.

The Specialist, Internal Communications develops, edits and publishes editorial and organizational content on a daily basis for National Geographic’s intranet NG Connect. They are also responsible for writing and publishing of content for the Society’s weekly newsletter and digital information monitors, as well as helping with planning and execution of employee engagement events.

Your Impact

Responsibilities

  • Develop, edit and publish editorial and organizational content on a daily basis for NG Connect (content ranges from feature stories, Q&As and staff events, to organizational information such as announcements, enterprise objectives, resources and National Geographic history). Ensure content contributors follow NG Connect editorial guidelines and provide training and editing feedback to colleagues across the organization. (40%)
  • Produce and build weekly NG Connect News Digest newsletter in Salesforce Marketing Cloud. Build the weekly CEO note to staff — as well as singular invitations and other NGS all-staff communications — in Marketing Cloud. Develop content and oversee the deployment of relevant, all-staff information to the digital monitors at National Geographic headquarters. Act as point of contact for all teams and individuals with digital monitor content requests, and oversee the deployment schedule for content within the Exterity system. (20%)
  • Plan and execute internal events to accommodate in-person and remote workers, including joint gatherings/meetings for National Geographic Society, and National Geographic Partners staff and Australian Embassy staff, as well as Society-only events. Assemble a committee to help produce certain internal events, including the staff talent show, volunteer efforts and other employee-engagement opportunities. Manage the group’s involvement throughout the event planning and execution process. (20%)
  • Coordinate ongoing, small group opportunities for staff to meet with the Society’s CEO, Senior Leadership and Board of Trustees, to provide an opportunity for an open dialogue and allow employees to share feedback directly with the organization’s leadership. Also develop comprehensive meeting briefs and background documents to support the Society’s CEO. (10%)
  • Support employee engagement initiatives across the Society by assisting with scheduling, logistics, etc. for employee events and programs (10%)


Minimum Education Required

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or related field.

Minimum Years And Type Of Experience

2+ years of experience with a combination of journalism and corporate communications. Experience writing for print and website a necessity. Experience using a content management system and email marketing software such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud also beneficial.

Knowledge And Skills Required

  • Stellar reporting, writing and editing skills – knowledge of AP Style preferred. Solid news judgment and understanding of sensitivities related to internal communications
  • Ability to get along well with others and be able to work diplomatically at all levels
  • Strong project management and event management skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Visual/creative skills and some knowledge of picture editing, including experience in Adobe Photoshop
  • Content management system experience and social media savvy
  • Proficiency with email marketing software such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud

Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position is $63,000 - $75,000

Pay offered to candidates will be based on several factors including but not limited to industry-based or other relevant work experience, education, skills, certifications, and training.

Job Designation

Hybrid - At the Society, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday. Hybrid staff are also always welcome to come in additional days each week if they prefer.
