Description

Jefferson County’s Heritage Stewardship Team is tasked with the protection and management of cultural and paleontological resources on Open Space properties including 365 cultural sites, 34 paleontological sites, and more than a hundred historic buildings and structures.

This division is seeking a Heritage Resource Specialist to join the team!

The Ideal Candidate

The Heritage Resources Specialist, Museum position is responsible for the operations of the Hiwan Museum at the Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) Hiwan Heritage Park including but not limited to collections management, collections inventory, volunteer docent management and coordination, and museum house tours. This position is the liaison for the local non-profit partner, Evergreen Mountain Area Historical Society (EMAHS). The EMAHS liaison role includes collaboration with EMAHS on collections management, temporary exhibits in the Museum, and attending monthly Board meetings. This position will train JCOS staff and volunteers for museum tours and programs and provide public outreach and communication with other work units, departments, and agencies.

The ideal candidate will be someone who has experience in museum studies, art history, and collections management and curation; has proven prior experience working with docent management, non-profits, and handling multiple projects at once.

Schedule

This position has a flexible work schedule that can be determined in coordination with their supervisor. The position can be a 4-day or 5-day workweek and will work at least one weekend day (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday). Due to the nature of the work, this position usually operates on-site at the Hiwan Heritage Park in Evergreen, CO.

Compensation

Hiring Range: $35.00 - $40.00 USD Hourly

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience and skills.

Essential Duties

  • Manage the Hiwan Museum collections including conducting an inventory of collection items and inputting data into the PastPerfect data management system; manage the PastPerfect database; monitor the museum’s environmental and collections conditions; ensure the museum is compliant with museum standards; managing the accession and deaccession process of the collections; implementing and overseeing NAGPRA regulations and processes. Manage the part-time Collection Assistants who are currently working on these processes.
  • Oversee the Hiwan Museum operations including the coordination of paid tour guides and volunteers (recruitment, training, communication, and retention); provide museum tours to the public as needed; routine Museum cleaning/custodial duties including the Annual Deep Clean. Manage day-to-day aspects of projects and museum operations.
  • This position is the liaison for the local non-profit partner, Evergreen Mountain Area Historical Society (EMAHS), including attending monthly board meetings on-site at Hiwan; contribute to the EMAHS newsletter; collections management check-ins with EMAHS; EMAHS event and program liaison. This position will also oversee and collaborate with EMAHS on temporary exhibits in Hiwan.
  • Provide training for volunteer projects in collaboration with other Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) staff. Assist JCOS staff with museum and collection outreach information. Provide information and participate when requested for the advisory committee and various stakeholder groups. Participate in public meetings as needed. Interact with park neighbors and on-site park visitors concerning museum and collections management and accessibility.
  • Assist with interviewing and evaluating potential permanent and seasonal employees during the hiring process. Assist with managing time accounting records and providing reports for supervisors and managers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Public History, History, Art History, Curation, Conservation or related field;
  • Plus, a minimum of two years of experience in museums, curation, conservation, or related experience;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Experience with non-profits
  • Experience with museum and collections best practices and stewardship programs
  • Experience managing or conducting house tours and/or guided tours of heritage sites
  • Experience with NAGPRA regulations and best practices
  • Experience with volunteer, tour docent, and part-time staff management
  • Experience entering and tracking collections data, specifically using PastPerfect or similar collections management databases
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • Experience with Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365/Workday
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism and diplomatic relationship building skillset.
  • Interest in community outreach and social engagement
