Millions of listeners and readers depend on Morning Edition and Up First to set the news agenda that starts their day. We deliver the latest international and national news stories paired with analysis to help put those headlines in context. Morning Edition is also a platform for accountability through interviews with government officials and decision-makers who make or influence policy that affect people’s lives. The show also features stories about music, art and books that bring joy and provoke thoughtful conversations about who we are in this world.

We are searching for an Associate Editor to be the voice and writer behind NPR’s flagship newsletter, Up First – “the news you need to start your day.”

This newsletter curates the top news stories of the day with reporting and analysis from NPR News and features trending culture stories that help readers stay informed while having fun. It delivers NPR’s signature context and insight into what’s happening around the world and features the best content NPR’s network has to offer such as podcasts, story series, investigations and more.

In collaboration with the newsletter editor and at the direction of the show’s management team, the Associate Editor curates, writes and produces the daily editions of the Up First newsletter including any special editions. The Associate Editor also writes promotional copy for the newsletter such as news app alerts.

This person is a writer with flair, good news judgment and solid editorial ethics. They consistently provide the audience with a great reading experience that feels conversational, unique and personal. They appreciate and represent the mission of NPR and Up First in their work.

The Associate Editor should be motivated to increase engagement with the newsletter audience and develop an understanding of what the audience wants and needs such as how to frame important news stories to appeal to readers. They also use audience data and feedback to help shape the editorial of the newsletter.

The right candidate for this position is interested in daily news and is eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners to start their day. They should understand the needs and wants of various audiences, and are motivated to expand digital content offerings from Morning Edition and Up First.

This position will work a Monday-to-Friday early morning shift, though candidates must be able to work a variety of shifts, including dayside, overnight, early, or evening shifts as news coverage and staffing needs change. Morning Edition operates six days a week on a 24-hour basis. Staff are expected to work holidays and weekends as assigned.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

Responsibilities

  • Curate, write and produce the daily Up First newsletter.
  • Produce a web version or presence of the newsletter on NPR digital platforms such as the website
  • Regularly attend editorial newsroom meetings to stay updated on coverage plans and content opportunities for the newsletter.
  • Review performance data to increase understanding of newsletter editorial and audience development strategies.
  • Participate in editorial and audience strategy plans in collaboration with the newsletter editor and execute on action plans to help achieve product goals.
  • Write stories for NPR’s digital platforms as assigned.
  • Train peers as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience writing news stories for digital platforms.
  • At least one year experience writing national and / or international news stories for digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work various shifts as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous newsletter writing experience.
  • Previous work experience or familiarity with public radio.
  • Proficiency in another language than English such as Spanish, Mandarin or Arabic.
  • Experience producing visual and social media content.
  • Experience writing and editing audio stories.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

Compensation

Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $42.06 per hour. The rate displayed reflects the hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options.
