The Marketing and Communications Specialist is part of an internal creative team that promotes Housing & Food Services (HFS) at the University of Washington. HFS offers a variety of living and dining options that support students and the larger UW campus community.

As an auxiliary enterprise, the department is funded solely by revenue from students and customers who utilize these programs and services, such as on-campus housing, residential dining, retail dining, UW Bay Laurel Catering, summer conference housing, and the Husky Card campus ID card. This position plays a key role in leading annual and ongoing efforts to market on-campus housing and food services options to prospective students and HFS residents. Effectiveness is achieved by ensuring that marketing tactics reflect ever-evolving trends and best practices, and support the department’s occupancy, resident satisfaction, and business goals.

This position is responsible for supporting the development and execution of targeted marketing and communications plans for new and existing HFS programs and services.


This role is expected to last from June, 2024 through January, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Digital and printed communications – 80%


  • Write, create templates for, schedule, and deploy Marketo email and newsletter content based on departmental happenings: Husky Home, Dining Newsletter, Executive Director’s Message
  • Utilize UTM links whenever possible.
  • Add alt-text to images.
  • Work with marketing assistant students to help with copy for emails, gain a student perspective.
  • Edit copy for emails: weekly all-staff emails, department letters.
  • Write copy and edit partner copy for website; publish pages to site.
  • Edit copy for various collateral such as brochures, menus, one-sheets and PowerPoint presentations for partner departments.
  • Review and provide edits for social media posts. Participate in social media Q&A to help write answers for social media responses.
  • Write and edit copy for department communications as needed.



Partner collaborations – 15%


  • Participate in project meetings with various department stakeholders where content creation is needed.
  • Collaborate with campus and department partners.
  • Serve on committees and work groups as needed.
  • Participate in on-campus events such as Move-In and Admitted Student Day.



Miscellaneous – 5%


  • Other related duties as assigned.

Communicating and promoting the benefits of HFS’s programs and services encourages students, faculty and staff to avail themselves of these opportunities, which can provide a sense of community, convenience and value—enhancing the campus environment and contributing to revenue for the Department, as well as the University. This position plays a key role in leading annual and ongoing efforts to market on-campus housing and food services options to prospective students and HFS residents.

WORKING CONDITIONS


  • Position works in a standard office environment with a shared creative suite. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend work to participate in events.
  • Work is performed in an open office setting with noise and other distractions. The position may travel to various campus locations with a laptop computer, camera or marketing materials.
  • A hybrid arrangement that includes working two days remotely is an option.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, business or a related field and 2 years’ experience creating and implementing marketing campaigns. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.


Desirable Qualifications


  • Proven leadership skills in developing executable strategies and tactical solutions that address communications and marketing needs, while leveraging and balancing the client relationship and need.
  • Proven interpersonal, problem solving and customer service skills within a diverse organization.
  • A passion for content, and expertise in using various communication vehicles that engage students and customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience with videography.
  • Experience using digital marketing tools and systems, such as digital e-newsletter platforms, content management systems and social media monitoring tools.
  • Experience working in higher education.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
