Director, Newsletters

Department: Editorial

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: New York, New York

Reporting To: Adam Duerson

Compensation: $100,000 - $150,000 / year

Description

As the Director, Newsletters, you will play a pivotal role in curating, editing, and enhancing the content of our suite of daily newsletters—a morning and evening edition, plus those we plan to launch and grow. Your responsibilities will span from brainstorming sessions with writers to the final vetting of each edition before publication. You will be tasked with injecting creativity, news sense, and a strategic business angle into every newsletter, maintaining a high standard of editorial excellence.

The dream candidate for this position will have years of experience at a business news-focused publication and closely follow the business side of sports. They will know as much about Josh Harris as they do about Josh Allen and as much about NIL as they do the NFL. They will be well-versed in private equity, have opinions about the future of media rights and platforms, and know what to make of an earnings report.

Key Responsibilities

  • Convene daily morning huddles with newsletter writers to brainstorm and map out the content for each edition.
  • Edit the newsletter to enhance clarity and style.
  • Infuse creativity and news sense into the process, exploring innovative presentations and constructions to evolve the newsletters.
  • Contribute to the writing process as needed.
  • Balance the newsletter team's Friday/weekend schedule, working ahead for Monday when possible and incorporating weekend events as needed.
  • Pull photos and build shells for each newsletter edition.
  • Craft snappy, clever newsletter headlines and provide SEO-friendly versions for backend optimization.
  • Coordinate with the copy desk to maintain a steady flow of high-quality copy.
  • Collaborate with news/features/pod/social teams to incorporate elements from across the FOS-verse into the newsletter and vice versa.

  • Plan ahead to balance news with evergreen/big-picture elements in the newsletters.
  • Map out coverage leading up to and covering tentpole events.
  • Ensure all content remains true to the FOS brand (business of sports), differentiating it from conventional sports sites.
  • Advance and analyze national storylines, avoiding aggregation and striving for unique perspectives.
  • Maintain daily coordination with the EIC, but be capable of always working independently.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Proven experience in curation, editing, and content development; newsletter experience is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of digital sports media and a business-oriented editorial approach.
