Development & Communications Intern
Reports to: Development & Communications Manager
Status: Part-Time, target of 20 hours weekly during summer break, up to 12 weeks
Salary: $16.75 hourly
Schedule : Flexible, primarily Monday-Friday, with some weekend and evening work on occasion
Location: SW Portland
Neighborhood House exists to strengthen our community by bringing neighbors together in reducing hunger and homelessness, educating our children, and connecting our seniors to resources.
Purpose of this Role
The Development and Communications intern will work on a small team focused on creating and enhancing donor relationships, building new connections, and increasing our visibility in the community through various outreach campaigns. This role requires a creative mind, someone who gets excited about telling stories, optimizing our social media presence, crafting compelling communications and creating marketing strategies.
Primary Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for uncovering stories within our programs, building trust quickly and then finding creative ways to tell those stories with integrity, via email blasts, social media platforms, and other marketing and advertising outlets.
The successful Development and Communications intern has strong writing skills, great attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines. This position will also participate in coordinating events in and around the Portland metro community and as such should thoroughly enjoy engaging and interacting with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. .

Minimum Required Qualifications
- This internship is open to graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing opportunities in the following areas: Communications, Marketing, Fundraising and Development.
- Experience with social media platforms and a basic level understanding of algorithms.
- Prior experience writing articles, newsletters, brochures, flyers, etc. and utilizing graphic design tools.
- Personal or professional experience interacting with individuals from different cultures, diverse communities, and/or those whose English language skills are limited.
- Knowledge of graphic design tools: Canva, etc.
- Familiarity with email marketing tools: Squarespace, Mailchimp, MyEmma, etc.
- Submit a resume and cover letter clearly outlining how your education and/or prior work experience lends itself to this opportunity.
- Write a short article (200-300 words) that would hypothetically be featured in our Neighborhood House newsletter, distribution includes: our supporters, donors, clients, community members, neighbors, volunteers, etc.
