About This Position

Approximately 48 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2023, one of the busiest airports in the country in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact of $38 billion annually.

The Aviation Department has a vacancy for a Public Information Manager position. This is a media relations position providing critical support as the manager of communications for the City of Phoenix Aviation Department, including local and national media relations, website content, social media, printed materials/graphic design, video production, and internal employee communications. The Public Information Manager supervises staff of media relations and digital content professionals.

The Ideal candidate will have a strong background in media relations, public information, communications, or journalism. The Public Information Manager must be willing to be on-call at any time for media purposes. The position currently is Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm with on-call requirements.

Major Duties Include

  • Plan and executive media events.
  • Oversee the monthly e-newsletter “PHX-Check-In.”
  • Handle internal and external communications during an emergency.
  • Review and create content for Sky Harbor’s social media accounts.
  • Respond to customers questions and comments on social media.
  • Administer all responses to media public records requests.
  • Write executive communications, including speaking points for events.
  • Participate in the on-call media and social media rotation, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and answer local, national, and international media inquiries.
  • Develop and manage communication plans for projects, events, and operational changes to the City of Phoenix three owned airports.
  • Review and edit articles submitted for both internal and external publications to ensure accuracy and communication goals.
  • Develop, research, write, and coordinate media campaigns and communication plans for Airport events and programs.
  • Monitor and be knowledgeable of aviation industry news and potential issues that could impact the airport in an effort to develop a plan of action.
  • Oversee website content for the City of Phoenix three owned airports: skyharbor.com, deervalleyairport.com, and goodyearairport.com.
  • Manage and oversee internal Aviation Department communications, including the Aviation Weekly News, an internal e-newsletter sent to all department employees.
  • Prepare, review, and edit news releases, newsletters, publications, speaking points for management, media advisories, executive communications, video scripts and reports.

SALARY

Hiring Range: $86,590.40 to $134,326.40 annually.

Pay Range: $86,590.40 to $116,022.40 annually.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years of professional experience in program and project management, preferably within a government or public sector environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Project Management, Journalism, Mass Media Communications, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience managing professional staff.
  • Experience with audio-visual equipment and its uses.
  • Experience with graphic design principles and layout techniques.
  • Experience working in public relations or mass media communications.
  • Experience using social media such as Facebook, X (formally Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, and other cutting-edge social sites.
