Communications Assistant

The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awards the Carnegie Medal for Heroism and provides grants and other support to civilian heroes for acts of extraordinary heroism occurring in the U.S. and Canada.

The Hero Fund’s outreach and communications department handles 1.) the Hero Fund brand and all of its outward-facing products including its biennial report, newsletter, social media, and website; 2.) interactions with the members of the media as well as the general public; and 3.) assisting heroes or their families with the resources available to them.

We are looking for a full-time Communications Assistant.

Full-time (40 hrs./week) – Downtown Pittsburgh (Hybrid work from home/in-person position)

Reports to: Director of Outreach & Communications

Salary - $35,000 - $40,000 per year plus generous compensation package (11 paid, annual holidays, additional paid-time off starting at 10 personal days and 10 vacations days per year, employer-funded retirement plan, health, life and long term-disability insurance with no premium cost to employee, and employee-funded 403B plan

Job duties include:

* Interacting with members of the public by phone or email to address requests

* Writing articles for publication online and in newsletter

* Graphic and newsletter design

* Management of grave marker program, which includes providing grave markers to families as requested, updating any information related to awardee deaths, and tracking grave markers distributed

* Assisting with Communications-related special projects. Past special projects have included podcast, A New Century of Heroes book, website redesign, Roll of Honor creation, event planning, biennial report writing, and working with large media organizations such as 60 Minutes, The New York Times, and CBS Sunday Morning.

* Assisting with correspondence and historic research for the Hero Fund and at the request of outside historians or family members who want to learn more about previous recipients

* Management of Hero Fund’s social media content with opportunities to grow social media awareness

* Content creation for website through WordPress CMS

* Video editing for social media content

* Assisting with drafting and distribution of news releases

* Organizing and categorizing material and media of historical significance

Desired Qualifications:

* Passion for Hero Fund’s mission. Our philosophy is that it is paramount for Hero Fund employees to care about the organization and the people it recognizes and supports. Everything else can be taught.

* Personable and professional demeanor

* Experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

* Organized, receptive to feedback, communicative

* Attention to detail is of paramount importance to keep information accurate and consistent across all platforms.

* WordPress experience

* Some journalism or other writing experience/training

* Video editing experience
