Roving Producer

City Cast Washington, DC
No longer accepting applications

City Cast is looking for a Roving Producer to join the team of creative folks who work across our network of daily, local news podcasts and newsletters. You'll work on almost all of our podcasts, filling in for vacationing colleagues and unexpected absences, supporting cities on longer projects and getting ahead, and occasionally working on special projects, reruns, ads, and more. The right person for this role has strong audio editing and mixing chops and a distinctive creative sensibility. You'll be spending your days see-deep in audio-cutting tape, looking for great local stories, and in general, making great content. You also care deeply about local news, you know how to guide an interview, and you're comfortable working under deadline pressure with cities in different time zones.

Deadline to apply: May 10th, 2024

Key Responsibilities

  • Stepping in to produce a City Cast podcast when someone's out of office or when a team is working on a longer project and/or needs additional production support: identifying stories, booking guests, crafting host questions, guiding interviews, logging tape, scripting, and editing and mixing the resulting audio into great listening,
  • Injecting style and distinctive flair into each day's episode via your discerning use of good tape, and creative story framing.
  • As needed, working on special projects with various teams.
  • Identifying, researching, and shaping cities' most important daily stories - helping teams decide on topics and guests that make their show sing.
  • When requested, helping teams find, vet, and book guests, conduct research, and pre-interviews, and write scripts- with an eye towards creating smart, fun, digestible accessible shows that help listeners feel more connected to their cities.
  • Occasionally joining city teams to attend feedback and pitch meetings.
  • Understanding various city workflows and keeping track of how each team functions to better prepare yourself and others in the roving team.
  • Helping assist colleagues by occasionally responding to audio-related questions, sharing one's knowledge of audio and podcasting, and occasionally pitching and writing guidelines and step-by-steps for our network's Wiki.
  • Contributing to a newsletter edit or build as needed
  • Contributing to an inclusive, kind, and supportive work environment that enables you and your team to do your best work.
  • Occasionally producing ads and promos, and rerun episodes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent audio editing skills, with the ability to quickly identify the most compelling elements of a recorded interview, edit those elements into a clear narrative and mix audio.
  • Experience producing interviews from soup to nuts: from identifying the right guests and pre-interviewing, to flagging the most valuable tape and editing it into a compelling story.
  • Experience making thoughtful editorial decisions on deadline.
  • Strong communication skills, with a knack for writing audio scripts that sound natural and conversational.
  • A longing to make audio content that sounds delightful and fresh. An understanding of what an audio track might need and how to improve its quality.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, love of adventure, and the flexibility and willingness to work with different cities in different time zones, and to fill a variety of roles in a nimble, startup environment.
