Communications Specialist - Family Medicine

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Family Medicine is looking for a Communication Specialist. This position will plan, develop, implement, and assess inter- and intra-departmental communication and outreach efforts that represent the Department of Family Medicine using diverse materials and channels, including print, digital, broadcast, and social media; public events; displays and exhibitions; and public speech. Target communications toward target audiences, including but not limited to faculty, staff, prospective applicants and trainees, alumni, current and prospective donors, and professional and industry partners.

Position is a 50% FTE and based on campus in Iowa City, Iowa.

This position is eligible to participate in remote work. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa. Successful candidates who participate in remote work must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Additional Duties

  • In conjunction with the Executive Leadership Team, develop and implement a communication strategy within the Department.
  • Serve as liaison, collaborate, and ensure appropriate coordination with the UIHC Marketing and Communications team.
  • Identify opportunities to utilize communication and media to build the institutional brand, including faculty profiles, research grant highlights, new clinical research study openings, etc.
  • Interact in ways that enhance relations with various stakeholders which include alumni, physicians and physicians-in-training, donors, patients, and the general public.
  • Ensure integration of content and alignment with branding standards across all mediums of communication. Continuously review and ensure consistency across information published on external and internal websites.
  • Collaborate with departmental and program leadership, human resources, and the UIHC Marketing and Communications team to develop marketing and outreach materials that highlight achievements as well as current and new programs and services. This may include but is not limited to production of videos or vignettes.
  • Collaborate with leaders to support projects and initiatives through support with communication and outreach; may assist in developing content for, or use templates to create brochures, flyers, and other marketing materials to support conferences, presentations, and other outreach events.
  • Collaborate with the Chair’s Office through the dissemination of a recurring newsletter and/or other communications within the Department.
  • Draft department announcements, notifications, and other communications, as needed.
  • Develop PowerPoint presentations for leadership to deliver key messages to faculty and staff, consistent with brand guidelines.
  • Develop content, update, and maintain departmental (Carver College of Medicine) website and departmental SharePoint site. Create appropriate links to internal and external web pages that expand or reinforce content.
  • Collect, edit, and archive departmental digital photos.
  • Appropriately handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • May attend special events to help facilitate and execute their success.
  • May manage and maintain professional social networking sites for the Department.
  • May assist with analysis of social media and web usage statistics by utilizing Google analytics and/or other usage tools.
  • May perform other duties, as assigned.


Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required


Experience Required

  • Minimum of one year of related professional experience in the field of marketing, communications, or public relations.
  • Demonstrated experience with professional writing and communication.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, writing, and editing engaging content for social media and online platforms.
  • Demonstrate careful attention to detail and accuracy, possess strong organizational skills, have the ability to handle multiple tasks quickly, and proactively prioritize requests from various sources in order to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Proficient in computer software applications (Microsoft Office Programs specifically Excel, Word, Teams, and PowerPoint), and electronic survey instruments.


Desired Qualifications

  • Two to three years of related professional experience in the field of marketing, communications, or public relations.
  • Related communications experience in a health care setting or academic medical center.
