POSITION TITLE: Staff Writer/Content Producer

REPORTS TO: Managing Editor
Primary Purpose
The primary purpose of the position is to write both short- and long-form articles for The Trusted Professional, a bimonthly newspaper, and NextGen magazine, a biannual magazine, along with daily blog posts for both publications. The role is responsible for interviewing, writing, research and editing accounting and finance content.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Keep abreast of internal and external topical issues that are relevant to members and the accounting/finance profession, including legislative and regulatory affairs.
- Conduct phone, podcast and video interviews with NYSSCPA members and other external sources.
- Ability to synthesize complex accounting issues and specializations and to also write about social events, award winners and periodic obituaries.
- Daily blogging on the nysscpa.org website.
- Actively pitch relevant story ideas
- Primary research skills required for in-depth reporting.
- Speech writing experience and familiarity with writing in the “voice” of senior leaders.
- A drive to learn about emerging markets such as, cannabis, sustainability, cryptocurrency, and a commitment to report on critical issues that affect the profession, such as diversity, equity and inclusion, and timely issues like mental health and work life balance.
- Develop relationships with professionals and thought leaders in an effort to network and develop story ideas and quotes.
- Assist with the maintenance of editorial and photographic files.
- Carry out special editorial projects as required.
- Attend NYSSCPA events as needed for story assignments and reporting.
Knowledge and Skills
- Must have a basic knowledge of financial systems and accounting practices.
- Requires a degree in journalism, communications or related field.
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Writing samples must be submitted.
- Familiarity with the AP Stylebook as an editing guide.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in newspaper, newsletter publishing, magazines or related communications experience.
- Experience in using content management systems.
- Ability to interact well with different types of people and to get the story.
Problem Solving/Decision Making:
The Staff Writer/Content Producer needs good problem-solving and decision-making skills to address basic issues as they relate to the level of responsibilities for this position. However, this position should defer to the Editor of the Trusted Professional, if issues cannot readily be resolved.
Communications:
Strong communication skills are the prerequisite for this position. The Staff Writer/Content Producer must interact with staff, members, and other professionals to meet the bi-monthly production schedule and to write and solicit articles and other online content.

This position is hybrid and the candidate will be able to work both from home and from the office at 200 Madison Avenue. All candidates should reside in the tri-state area and within commuting distance to 200 Madison Avenue in Manhattan.

This is a grade 5 non-exempt position with a salary range of $56,135-$64,478, with a competitive 401(k).
