Classification Title: Education & Outreach Specialist, C21
Location: Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Island Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, FL 33702
Work Schedule: 29 hours per week; occasional varying days and hours
- Thursday – Friday; 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Saturday; 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Sunday; 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
This is a part-time position assisting with facility operations, education and volunteer coordination with weekend work required.
Join a small team of environmental educators to help operate the award-winning Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center in Pinellas County! This is a unique opportunity to work and learn in a coastal ecosystem and renowned archaeological site with others who love nature and heritage as much as you do. This part-time position also works closely with a team of volunteers to foster an excellent visitor experience.
What Will You Do?
- Assist with marketing and promotion of educational programs.
- Plan and organize educational programs for the public.
- Plan and organize volunteers to ensure adequate support during public open hours.
- Assist with program registration, evaluations, and data entry.
- Implement training program for volunteers.
- Design, manage, and distribute monthly program brochure.
- Attend occasional outreach events on behalf of the Center.
- Assist with daily operations of facility including opening, closing, and general tidiness of building.
- Assist with hosting and/or facilitating programs, field trips, camps, meetings and other events.
- Answer emails and phone calls in a prompt and professional manner.
- Assist with social media accounts and e-newsletter.
- Design and maintain seasonal educational displays.
- Compile and analyze essential facility data.
What Do You Need?
- 3 years’ experience working in a training/museum/educational/teaching field performing paraprofessional or technical support training, making presentations, or communicating to groups; or
- Associate’s degree in general or specialized study and 1 year experience as described; or
- Bachelor’s degree in general or specialized study and some experience as described; or
- An equivalent combination of training, education, and/or experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Ability to consistently work weekend shifts.
- Ability to work independently in a stand-alone education center with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn/apply computer applications and software.
Highly Desirable
- Proficiency in Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other media platforms.
- Quick learner with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Creative and flexible.
- Knowledge of local flora, fauna and/or archaeology.
- Public speaking experience .
- Experience with program promotion and hosting software (I.e., Canva, Eventbrite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
