The Golden LEAF Foundation seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, quick learner to join the team at Golden LEAF responsible for external-facing activities of the Foundation. The focus of this role is to support social media, website, email newsletter, graphic design, and other related project needs. This role will support Scholarship Program activities approximately 60 percent of the time. This role reports to the Vice President/Chief of Staff and works closely with the Scholarship Program Manager.
Primary Functions
Social Media
- Plan, draft, and post engaging and relevant content to Golden LEAF Scholars Instagram and the Golden LEAF ScholarsConnect platform, including use of video and photography
- Plan, draft, and send text messages using the Golden LEAF text messaging platform
Website
- Regularly update the Golden LEAF Scholarship website
- Participate in development of new Golden LEAF and Golden LEAF Scholars websites
Email
- Format content for regular email newsletters and other outreach following guidelines
- Support development and drafting of content for monthly newsletters for Scholars and Alumni
- Collaborates with the Data Manager to ensure mailing lists are up-to-date
Graphic Design
- Create graphic elements for use on website, social media, and email newsletters using Canva templates
- Develop, design, or update one-pagers/handouts for Scholar outreach and engagement
- Format and update PowerPoint/Google Slides presentations
Other
- Review, analyze, and track metrics associated with website, social media, and email and develops recommendations
- Research, source, and design items to be distributed to Golden LEAF Scholars (t-shirts, hats, cups)
Example day-to-day activities
- Plan social media content for an upcoming event at a college or university, including posts to ScholarsConnect and Instagram, in collaboration with the members of the team responsible for planning the scholar outreach events
- Design images in Canva to accompany social media posts on Instagram and ScholarsConnect
- Format newsletter content provided in a Word document into MailChimp for regular monthly newsletter
- Update a survey from the prior year (in SurveyMonkey or Airtable), receive a list of rising seniors from the Data Manager, format and send an email in MailChimp
- Update most recent scholar spotlight and upcoming scholar events on Golden LEAF Scholarship website
- Review and analyze ScholarsConnect data from recent campaign to share successes, pivots, and recommendations to improve upcoming campaigns
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of two years experience relevant to the Primary Functions of the Digital Communications Specialist position listed above.
- Demonstrated aptitude for learning new tools (see next section for a list of tools used by Golden LEAF)
- Demonstrated understanding of the process of following a Brand Guide or similar set of design rules when designing and executing various deliverables to ensure consistency (for example, using consistent fonts, sizes, colors, etc.)
- Demonstrated proficiency in use of common software programs, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (or Google Drive equivalents).
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of two years experience performing nearly all of the Primary Functions of the Digital Communications Specialist position listed above.
- Demonstrated proficiency in use of common online tools including Canva (or similar design tool), MailChimp (or similar email service), Co-Schedule or Later (or similar social media scheduling tool).
- Experience using project management tools to track and manage tasks. Golden LEAF uses Asana and Airtable.

Location
This position will be based at the Golden LEAF offices at 301 N. Winstead Avenue in Rocky Mount, NC. Golden LEAF staff in part-time roles are required to work from the office on either a Monday or Thursday each week, with the option to work remotely the remainder of the week. This role may be asked to work from Rocky Mount on a more frequent basis as needed for collaboration with the External Affairs team.
This is a part-time position scheduled up to 25 hours per week. This part-time position may establish their own regular work schedule within Golden LEAF’s core business hours of 8:30am and 5pm, subject to approval by their supervisor. This position will be expected to participate in regular All Staff meetings and other External Affairs meetings, which may be scheduled outside of the regular work schedule.

Compensation and Benefits
The Communications Specialist position is a part-time position with compensation and benefits commensurate with responsibilities and experience. This position has an anticipated hiring range of $30 – $45 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience, and is anticipated to work an average of 25 hours per week.
Golden LEAF provides the following benefits to employees:
- Golden LEAF paid contributions to a retirement plan at the rate of ten percent (10%) of base salary with no required contribution by the employee.

Timeline
