CityWorks DC’s mission is to dramatically improve the early career outcomes of DC youth and young adults of color by creating innovative programs and by mobilizing employers, educators, and city leaders to create a local, diverse talent pipeline. Our vision is that all young people in DC have the “social mobility trifecta”: 1) valuable certifications and credentials; 2) paid, relevant work experience; and 3) a supportive professional network. To provide this trifecta to all students, especially those who are marginalized and historically overlooked, CityWorks DC focuses its work on redesigning how young people experience high school, postsecondary, and early employment into multiple pathways to high-wage, high-demand careers.

To accomplish this bold vision, CityWorks DC’s theory of change has two complementary strands: 1) launch a targeted set of innovative programs that work directly with young people; and 2) lead citywide initiatives designed to create lasting change in our education and training systems for DC youth.

Job Overview:

The Chief of Staff will assist the President and CEO with a variety of duties as a thought partner and delegate. The individual will be an integral part of the senior leadership team and adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously. The ideal candidate has experience in program management and operations, grant writing and reporting, and non-profit financial management. The individual should also be familiar with developing and executing strategy at a senior level in a small or medium-sized organization.

Successful candidates may have previously served in one of the following roles: Director of Programs, Development, or Operations. We are also open to individuals considering a lateral move from another C-level position where they managed multiple programs, grants, or lines of work simultaneously.

Sample Responsibilities:

Support President & CEO

Prioritize and manage workflow for President & CEO
Lead special projects as needed
Act as proxy for President & CEO, when needed
Attend Board meetings as designee of Secretary

Supervise Enterprise Operations

Supervise Operations Associate who is responsible for daily operations and financial management tasks
Monitor spending and cash flow
Supervise external accounting contractor
Serve as point of contact for PEO (payroll & HR services)
Ensure monthly and quarterly financial reports are delivered from vendor in timely manner
Organize and execute the annual budget process
Senior point of contact for auditor (with support from external accountant and Operations Associate)
Manage Performance Evaluation process & documentation

Support Development & Fundraising

Create project plans and manage the grant writing process, monitor grant deliverables, and track required reports with CEO
Maintain donor records in NeonCRM
Serve as thought partner to CEO for drafting grant proposals and reports
Draft grant proposals and reports for CEO consideration

Co-Develop & Execute on Plan for Strategic Learning

Develop key analyses and memos to shape and inform strategy
Contribute to organization systems-change articulation, CityWorks theory of change, and field-building
Develop and manage annual internal data review cycle to inform continuous learning and reporting

Coordinate External Relationships & Messaging

Guide and coordinate the development of an annual communication plan
Supervise communications contractor to
Deliver monthly newsletter and weekly social media calendar
Draft, edit, and finalize written materials for CityWorks DC, as needed
Coordinate communications across CityWorks programs and projects

Support Innovative Programs

Partner with Apprenticeship Team to implement demonstration programming at 12+ regional employer sites
Develop and maintain relationships with employers to accelerate improvement and facilitate problem solving, as needed
Assist with the implementation of robust data collection, reporting, and publishing learnings

Provide guidance and support to program team on an as needed basis

Qualifications:

Deep commitment to achieving racial equity and the belief in the promise inherent in all people
Adaptable, agile, and able to perform in a fast-paced, startup environment
Interest in and passion for workforce-related topics
5+ years of relevant work experience in operations, development, and/or program management
Extensive experience with youth and/or adults (e.g., nonprofit program administration, youth services, high school/college counseling, high school administration, career coaching, human services, etc.)
Strong verbal and written communication skills and the comfort to engage with a variety of stakeholders via email, phone, Zoom, Google Meet, and in-person
Initiative and proactive problem-solving skills, including the willingness to take on unexpected tasks and responsibilities
Excellent project and time management skills and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks at once
Strong organizational skills and detail orientation
Excellent skills in the Google Suite and Microsoft Office; comfort using or quickly learning case management tracking or data collection software such as Neon CRM or Salesforce
Substantial data analysis and program evaluation experience is a plus
Familiarity with the Washington, DC area and education/workforce development is a plus

Logistics

The CityWorks DC team operates in a hybrid working environment requiring one day per week in person and additional required in-person attendance for programmatic activities, team planning and retreats, and other organizational events. Therefore, individuals must have the ability to report in person to our offices in Washington, DC. We prefer a start date between May 1-15 for this position; however, this is negotiable.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position with an anticipated starting salary band of $155,000-$175,000 commensurate with experience. (Interested and highly-qualified candidates are encouraged to apply and discuss compensation expectations outside of this range during the initial interview.)
