Our editorial team—award-winning journalists (we’ve previously crafted content for Men’s Health, Gear Patrol, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, Women’s Health, Men’s Journal, Runner’s World, Popular Science, and more) who are immersed in wellness—dig into the latest health discoveries, test new gear, and converse with leading physicians, nutritionists, dieticians, and fitness pros.

And we’re looking for a health journalist to join our ranks as a Staff Writer, Health.

The Position

Hone is seeking an enthusiastic, digital health staff writer to create service-packed and informative daily health content for our site and newsletter.

Reporting to the Editorial Director, you’ll cover health news and trends, and talk to fascinating experts and people who have made positive life changes. Your content will be a mix of articles, listicles, transformation stories, and other formats, skewing heavily on health explainers. You’ll also manage a weekly newsletter for our customers.

The ideal candidate is a journalist who comes from a national media brand and/or subscriber-based consumer product company. You’re a clean and quick writer who is equally skilled in turning a phrase and making readers think. You understand the difference between good copy and great copy—and how to elevate the former into the latter. You have good SEO skills and great editorial judgment. You are intensely reliable and accountable; you can work quickly and independently but welcome feedback and collaboration.

You’re deeply immersed within places like Reddit, Instagram, TikTok and other social platforms, where you’re adept at spotting a groundswell trend first. You’ve got the metabolism to craft a decent volume of stories each week, without sacrificing quality at the expense of expediency. You relish finding interesting health angles around cultural and current events. And your approach and prose make the most staid or hackneyed topics feel relevant and fresh.

You’ll join a rapidly growing, close-knit team of writers and editors who are creating a digital editorial imprint for Hone. Ideally, you’re practicing what we’re preaching; interested in living a healthy lifestyle and in optimizing your personal health. The editorial team is based in New York City, though we welcome remote applicants who are willing to attend EST meetings.

Primary Responsibilities:

Write 3-4 SEO-focused articles, 1 newsletter, and 1-2 news or transformation stories per week, owning all aspects of article production — pitching, interviewing sources, researching, writing, and packaging
Manage a weekly health-focused newsletter
Act as the edit team’s primary liaison to the Hone Community, a hub for our customers. You’ll look for story ideas (including transformation stories), and chat directly with customers to understand what content will best serve them
Obsess over analytics and use them to shape how you approach future articles
Contribute writing and brainstorming for larger initiatives as the need arises
Update existing articles as needed to maintain SERPs ranking

Requirements

You have 3+ years of relevant writing experience, crafting quality content for a national media brand or similar company—with an emphasis on traffic growth via SEO
You have a background in health content and service journalism
You have an understanding of health reporting best practices and the ability to distill complex information into understandable and engaging information for users
You bring a unique voice to health writing
You know how to publish content in a CMS, ideally Wordpress, and know how to use SEO tools such as Ahrefs
You’re well-versed in Google Trends and Google News
You can pitch endless story ideas that are timely, shareable, thought-provoking, and editorially sound—and are the first one to pivot if something isn’t working
You’ve got a strong GIF game to bring to our Slack channels
