ISAIAH is looking for a person with digital communications experience who is passionate about grassroots organizing and using creative storytelling to advance a shared narrative of people across a multi-racial, multi-faith organization.
ISAIAH’s office is located in St. Paul, MN. This position entails regular travel to the office and other locations primarily but not limited to the metro. Some duties and responsibilities may be completed remotely.
Full-time position with benefits. The ideal starting date is late February 2024.
This position reports to the communications director and regularly works with ISAIAH’s communications and organizing team.

Job Description

The digital communications organizer builds and shapes a public mandate for a multi-racial democracy and caring economy in Minnesota by translating the experiences and stories of everyday people across ISAIAH’s constituencies into compelling and creative digital campaigns. This position coordinates the content creation and amplification of ISAIAH’s organizing work through creative storytelling, digital tools, and social media platforms.

The digital communications organizer works with our different bases within the organization (e.g., faith leaders, Muslim coalition, Black barbershops and congregations, childcare providers, young adult coalition, etc. ) across the state to advance an integrated communications strategy with the communications team.

About ISAIAH And Faith In Minnesota

ISAIAH is a vehicle for multi-racial, multi-faith coalitions across Minnesota to act collectively and powerfully towards racial and economic equity in MN by addressing both local and regional community issues, including mass incarceration, immigration, healthcare, and racial inequity. Faith in Minnesota is our 501(c)4 organization that gives us a platform to organize and advocate directly in our state’s elections and political process.

What is the typical experience of being in this position?

Our communications and strategic narrative theory is that people move messages. We are committed to an integrated strategy between our field organizing and communications work. The digital communications organizer works at the center of these two departments to create and amplify the stories and experiences of people in order to shape the public and our broader base around our narrative.

This position will leverage both highly relational and technical skills to excel at their duties. This position will work directly with people in our organizing programs to develop leaders as storytellers and authentic messengers in the public arena, translating that content into creative digital content to advance our narrative and agenda. This position will also leverage social media and other digital tools to help create a clear and compelling narrative arc of our work online through digital content and earned media.

This position requires being able to hold multiple deadlines - and sometimes competing priorities - at the same time. Pacing of the organization’s work is often dependent on external factors and seasons of particular programs and campaigns.

ISAIAH is looking for someone with proven digital communications experience. That said, a strong candidate could possess strong competencies in most—not necessarily all—aspects needed for each of the key duties and responsibilities. ISAIAH is committed to the development of its staff. A strong applicant would have a desire and excitement to learn and grow in the areas they might not currently possess.

Key Duties and Responsibilities (not listed in any particular priority):

Creative Content for Strategic Narrative

Cultivate and curate creative content from volunteers, community members, and public leaders to create a public, online narrative to garner energy and support for our agenda.
Design creative campaigns for expanding membership, engagement, and support of ISAIAH and Faith in Minnesota’s constituency and beyond

Implement Authentic Messenger Program

Assist in creating the authentic messenger program with the organizing team
Recruit, train, and assist leaders across the organization in creating content in our narrative
Organize engagement and amplification of authentic messenger content across organizational channels and base

Social Media Management & Paid Digital Media

Assist in the planning, management, and implementation of organizational editorial calendar of organic and paid social media posts with the communications team across a variety of digital platforms and multiple coalitions/brands.
Develop and drive a strategy with the communications team to grow the organization’s online channels and meaningfully connect online relationships to offline organizing work.
Manage the creation, curation, and publication of day-to-day social media content and manage engagement.
Assist in the planning and management of the organizational editorial calendar with the communications team
Assist with live event coverage on social media, such as live streaming and live tweeting

Design

Create videos and static images/graphics that translate the organizing work of ISAIAH’s constituencies and stories of community leaders and volunteers.
Design static graphics, and memes for social media as needed.
Help prepare print materials with the communications team

Copywriting

Use written word to advance our narrative and frames in internal resources (such as social media toolkits and video scripts) and external content (such as social media posts and emails).
Assist with preparing messaging resources, such as social media toolkits, action alert scripts, and letters to the editor samples
Draft mass emails to including recurring publications, such as biweekly newsletter and Amplifier Network email
Assist communications team in earned media tactics, such as media advisories, press releases, and preparing leaders for interviews and press conferences

Digital Tools (email, online actions, websites)

Ensure our narrative work meaningfully saturates and builds our audiences online by leveraging tools (such as email, social media, online action pages) to create wraparound touchpoints for people to get and remain connected to our organizing work.
Assist with preparing online petitions, action forms, and email series
Assist with updating and managing organizational websites

You could be great for this role if:

You’re an excellent all-around communicator and have the ability to quickly draft sharp, persuasive, and well-messaged copy for a variety of audiences.
You have solid design chops and have an eye for design and some ability to use software like Photoshop or Illustrator, basic video editing, meme & GIF generators, and/or apps like Canva.
You have experience implementing paid digital media programs on platforms like Meta (Facebook, Instagram), YouTube, Google Search, Hulu, Tiktok, and online radio.
You have the ability to be nimble, open to change, and adaptable when new challenges, priorities, or roadblocks present themselves.
You can take an idea and run with it, while also keeping team members in the loop to ensure you get the feedback and buy-in you need.
You have a solid understanding of the strategic and tactical differences of various social media platforms in terms of goals and audiences.
You have a self-driven curiosity and willingness to learn new digital tools to connect them to driving a communications strategy.
You have a proven writing ability in a relevant setting (think action alerts, not articles).
You have basic competence with web development, especially with WordPress and Squarespace.
You have experience managing complex projects from start to finish, independently and as part of a team.
You have a familiarity with key data toolsets and platforms widely used in the progressive organizing world (e.g. TargetSmart, Civis, NGP VAN) and blast emails tools and online activism CRMs (Action Network, ActionKit, NationBuilder, EveryAction, New/Mode, Blue State Digital, etc.).

Work Environment

ISAIAH offers a flexible working environment for in-person and remote work. Expectations around in-person work requirements will be discussed and detailed with the supervising staff. Currently, the ISAIAH office is only open to fully vaccinated staff. Staff are provided a laptop and Zoom account to assist with virtual and remote work.
