Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource in the largest private mining land package in the U.S. The mine is located in White Pine County, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. Bald Mountain and the nearby Round Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.

Job Summary

The External Affairs Specialist serves as a link between the organization and local communities. Responsibilities include development and implementation of the organization’s stakeholder engagement and communications plan, facilitating stakeholder relations to include the site’s grant making processes, attending conferences and conventions when appropriate, serving as the point of contact, promoting and protecting the reputation of Kinross through effective social performance, while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ key values as a safety and sustainability focused mining company.

Essential Functions

Lead the development of the site’s annual stakeholder engagement, social responsibility, and communications plans.
Lead the site’s Community Investment Committee, production of investment plan, philanthropy reports and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
Assist in development of annual department budget to include advertising and marketing, public relations, and giving.
Develop and coordinate outreach programs, special events, tours, and opportunities for positive exposure in the local and statewide community.
Coordinate the site’s advertising, social media, and marketing efforts and strategy.
Attend mine related and community events as needed to establish contacts with the organizations and community.
Accurate and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
Responsible for timely updates to applicable SharePoint, spreadsheets, team calendars, and data tracking platforms (iAuditor, Intelex and Borealis).
Familiarize and incorporate Social Performance plans, policies, and principles.
Support external communications at Kinross Nevada sites; develop and maintain media and stakeholder contact lists, and communications with these groups in coordination with site leadership, the U.S. External Affairs Director, and Corporate Communications teams.
Support local and state government engagement plans in coordination with site leadership, the U.S. External Affairs Director, and Corporate Communications teams.
Assist in the development of Bald Mountain fact sheets, key messaging, brochures, advisories, and other collateral materials.
Prepare reports and presentations to internal and external stakeholders, including data compilation, writing, and proofreading.
Lead or participate in program development activities and compliance audits as appropriate.
Represent the company when needed on local committees or boards.
Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Provide internal communication support to Bald Mountain site leadership; responsible for production of a regular newsletter articles for Kinross World and coordination of the site’s public facing social media page.

Qualifications And Skill Requirements

Bachelor's degree in social responsibility, public relations, marketing, resource management, communications, or related field preferred. Experience in mining or other extraction industries preferred.
Significant career experience in communications, public affairs and/or business development may be substituted for education, preferred.
Exceptional leadership skills and the ability to work with a wide range of departments and individuals, association staff, industry peers, and colleagues from other mining companies.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and be a self-starter.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, and able to effectively manage time.
Ability to conduct research, develop reports, formulate objectives and strategies, make professional presentations, and conduct training.
Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational, and technical writing skills.
Must possess strong data management and computer skills.
General understanding of mining operations, as well as limited understanding of processing and maintenance operations, preferred.
Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
Ability to work on occasional assignments on weekends, evenings and during holiday periods.
Ability to travel within the benefit footprint as needed, estimated to be 25%.
Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis.
Requires valid Driver’s License.
