About us

The Linguistic Justice Foundation (LJF) is an independent Non-Governmental Organization, incorporated in the United States in 2024 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization.

It is the first and only organization dedicated exclusively to advancing linguistic justice for everyone. To date, LJF has not accepted any organizational funding for its establishment or operations.

LJF envisions a world of linguistic justice for everyone. We aim to work toward that vision by:

Providing free-of-charge education programs about language rights and how linguistic justice can be achieved,
Undertaking cutting-edge research, and
Providing expert assistance to organizations and systems that need it.

LJF is currently seeking its first two committed volunteer team members to support the organization’s foundational development beginning in February 2026. Both individuals will work closely with LJF’s Pro Bono Executive Director and contribute directly to strengthening LJF’s organizational development, thus contributing to expanding public awareness of linguistic justice and advancing accountability for people’s language rights.

Details overview

Location: Anyone may apply, but there is a strong preference for collaborators based in the New York tri-state area and Washington, D.C., to facilitate closer collaboration with the Foundation’s Pro Bono Executive Director.

Compensation: Unpaid volunteer roles.

Time Commitment: 2–3 hours per week, or otherwise agreed upon with the Pro Bono Executive Director.

Initial Term: 6 months, with the possibility of renewal upon successful completion of the first term.

LJF is in its early growth stage, and there are no staff positions available at this time. These are unpaid volunteer roles, and applicants must be able to demonstrate that they will not be exposing themselves to unnecessary risk or diminishing their livelihood by taking on this commitment.

All candidates will be interviewed in December 2025 and January 2026, prior to selection.

Positions available:

1. Nonprofit Management: Fundraising Support

Core Responsibilities

Assist in developing core nonprofit systems, workflows, and documentation.
Support fundraising research, donor outreach, and grant tracking.
Contribute to donor materials, proposals, and overall fundraising strategy.
Support general operations, scheduling, and program coordination.
Participate in strategic planning with the Pro Bono Executive Director.
Assist in preparing for meetings, events, and stakeholder engagements.

Required Qualifications

Interest and/or experience in nonprofit operations, administration, fundraising, and/or philanthropy.
Strong writing, research, and organizational skills.
Comfort handling confidential information.
Ability to multitask and work independently when needed.
Based in the New York tri-state area or able to collaborate regularly in Eastern Time.

Preferred Attributes

Strong interpersonal skills; able to build and maintain positive relationships based on shared agreements and mutual accountability.
Financial literacy: familiarity with grant writing, donor engagement, and nonprofit governance.
Passion for equity, human rights, language rights, and linguistic justice.
Numerical literacy and a problem-solving mindset suited to an early-stage nonprofit.
Ability to set boundaries for wellbeing and stress management.

2. Communications: Social Media Management & Content Creation

Core Responsibilities

Maintain and grow LJF’s presence on Instagram, LinkedIn, and via the LJF newsletter.
Create compelling written, visual, and multimedia content aligned with LJF’s mission.
Maintain content calendars and pipelines, building on a previously developed communications system.
Support community engagement, storytelling, and digital campaigns.
Track basic analytics and propose improvements for reach and engagement.
Collaborate closely with the Pro Bono Executive Director on messaging and strategy.

Required Qualifications

Strong communication skills, including writing and content creation.
Experience managing social media platforms for organizations, campaigns, or public-facing projects.
Graphic design or video editing skills preferred.
Organized, reliable, and able to meet agreed-upon deadlines.
Understanding of language rights, linguistic justice, equity, or social impact issues (or willingness to learn).
Based in the New York tri-state area or able to collaborate regularly in Eastern Time.

Creative storytelling instincts—both visual and narrative.
Proficiency in Canva or other visual design platforms.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a startup-style environment.

Organized and able to adhere to previously established communication systems.
Passion for equity, human rights, language rights, and linguistic justice.
Ability to set boundaries for well-being and stress management.

All Volunteer Eligibility & Ethical Requirements

LJF is committed to anti-oppression work, including actively preventing the reproduction of systemic inequities that can arise in social justice spaces. To ensure ethical participation, successful volunteer candidates must meet the following criteria:

Must be able to demonstrate that they will not be exposing themselves to unnecessary risk or diminishing their livelihood by taking on this commitment.
Must be able to commit 2–3 hours per week, or an alternative schedule agreed upon with the Pro Bono Executive Director.
Must be able to commit to an initial 6-month volunteer term starting February 2026, with the possibility of renewal.
