CLIMATE-SMART PROJECT SUMMARY: The climate-smart program will expand climate-smart agriculture and markets across organic and conventional farms in the Southern Piedmont of the United States. This work will implement climate-smart cover crops and no-till farming, study the impacts of these practices on greenhouse gas emissions and soil health, verify and improve the USDA COMET Planner for Southern Piedmont soils, assess the economic and social barriers to transition to climate-smart agriculture, evaluate various marketing strategies abilities to influence consumer behavior toward the purchase of climate-smart commodities, and develop an easy-to-use app for farmers to utilize while marketing value-added climate-smart commodities. This project provides enhanced financial incentives for underserved and small-scale farmers to encourage participation. The project plans to increase revenue streams and provide financial, equipment, and social support to guide the Southern Piedmont farming community toward the adoption of climate-smart agriculture.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Climate-Smart Outreach Coordinator position will be located at Rodale Institute headquarters in Kutztown, PA and report to the Director of Education with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Climate Smart Project Director as this position will work on the Climate Smart project. Travel seasonally throughout the project region is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Educational

Plan and execute 10 field days including outreach to participating farmers to identify a venue; event promotion and advertising; purchase and/or rental of tables, chairs, tents, portable restrooms, coordinating refreshments, and other guest amenities; managing of all branded materials and print collateral for distribution; work with the Climate-Smart project team (including project partners) to arrange workshops, tabling, and other educational activities occurring during the field day; creation of the event itinerary and timely distribution to the attending Climate-Smart partners and attending guests; managing event registrations and attendee database; and event evaluation, and other items required to run a successful farmer field day as needed.
Support the project team in any aspect needed to execute the educational and outreach events including with the Climate-Smart marketing research team to assist with consumer marketing research and data collection events, Market Manager Kickoff and Wrap-up meetings, and other activities as needed.
Assist with onboarding and educational webinars geared toward the participating farmers and farmers market managers to ensure their understanding and smooth introduction to the project.
Assist with the planning, preparation, and execution of yearly in-person Climate-Smart Partner meetings including securing the venue, arranging food, beverages, and other attendee amenities; managing all branded materials and print collateral for distribution; creation of the event itinerary and timely distribution to Climate-Smart partners.

Communications

Assist with highlighted farmer videos.
Act as liaison between the project team and POKET to add farmer related event dates (e.g., on-farm field days, focus group dates, reminders of farmer deadlines and deliverables, etc.) to the platform for farmer notification.
Assist with the production of newsletters, factsheets, presentations, white papers, and other informational pieces generated from this work
Assist with the organization and curation of photos, videos, and other digital media generated by the project in collaboration with the Climate-Smart project team.
Assist with the production, update and maintain the Climate-Smart Web Portal with digital materials, informational pieces, and other items as needed throughout the 5-year project.
Craft and upload social media posts to Rodale’s social media networks; provide social media posts and materials for the Climate-Smart partner team.
Capturing photography and videos during Climate-Smart events.
Editing/proofreading Rodale generated education and outreach materials generated from the Climate-Smart project.
Writing press releases associated with the Climate-Smart project.
Creation of biannual newsletter with updates from the CS Project
Creating graphics, fliers, advertisements, agendas, field day kits, etc. related to the Climate-Smart project and events.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in education, communications, journalism, or another related field.
2-4-years of demonstrated related work experience.
Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of farming professionals, researchers, NGO teams, and the public.
Very good organizational skills and analytical abilities; highly detail oriented.
Enthusiasm and ability to multi-task across a broad range of objectives.
Strong writing skills, including attention to grammar.
An understanding of voice, brand, and storytelling.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience organizing, advertising, and executing educational events.
Excellent written communication skills, and ability to develop content independently under tight deadlines.
Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro or iMovie, WordPress, Constant Contact, SurveyMonkey, and/or social media sites a plus.
Interest or ability in photography or video a plus.
Knowledge of and interest in organic food, farming, environmental issues, and science preferred.

TRAVEL:

Travel to the southeast (VA, NC, SC, and GA) is required for the 10 farmer field days, yearly Climate-Smart Partner meetings, highlighted farmer videos, farmer onboarding webinars, and other events as needed throughout the 5-year project.
