The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art (NMAA) is seeking creative and collaborative writer to join the Digital Content Team in our Marketing and Communications Department. Your role will support the different avenues of communications work at the museum, including advertising, digital content, public affairs, social media, and press and media relations. You will work closely with colleagues across the museum to craft engaging and informative copy around exhibitions, events, and institutional initiatives across our digital channels, including our website (asia.si.edu), blog, social media, and email newsletter. You will also work closely as part of a core team to define and refine the museum’s institutional voice.

The successful candidate will be a well-rounded writer: self-motivated, detail-oriented, and curious, with a proven track record of writing compelling content for a range of audiences across a variety of digital platforms. They will be confident translating complex information (including academic research material) into clear and inviting copy for a general audience, balancing cultural and political sensitivities, and reconciling the priorities of different stakeholders. They will be a team player who excels in a deadline-driven, collaborative team environment and who enjoys the challenge of working on multiple projects simultaneously.

Major duties include

Writing user-friendly and meaningful marketing copy in support of exhibitions, events, institutional initiatives, and standalone digital projects; adapting existing content across multiple digital platforms and for different audiences; authoring regular email newsletters highlighting upcoming programming; collaborating with contributors throughout the museum on blog posts; writing content to meet digital accessibility standards (i.e. alt text, visual descriptions, etc.); collaborating on multimedia projects as needed; drafting social media posts as needed; and other duties as assigned.

In executing these responsibilities, you can expect to:

· Work closely with content strategists, editors, and other key stakeholders around the museum to develop a consistent institutional voice

· Establish guidelines to promote consistency and coherence across our owned content channels

· Identify opportunities for content additions and improvements

· Build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues across the NMAA and at central Smithsonian

· Support the NMAA in its strategic vision to be more inclusive and welcoming to wider and more diverse audiences through investment in the museum’s digital channels

· Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in copywriting and digital content

Qualifications

Required:

· B.A. (communications, English, art history, or related field a plus)

· 2+ years of relevant copywriting experience, preferably in an outreach-oriented role

· Exceptional English-language writing and editing skills, including a strong grasp of style and grammar

· Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style standards

· Strong grasp of digital marketing best practices, including SEO

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)

· Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

· Ability to respond to constructive criticism and incorporate feedback

· Professional demeanor and collegiality

· Attention to detail

· Willingness to learn

Preferred:

· Experience writing about art historical content, whether through formal education or professional experience

· Experience working for a large non-profit organization and/or in the cultural sector

· Knowledge of web accessibility best practices and experience writing accessible digital content

· Knowledge of basic user experience writing principles and practices

· Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)

· Familiarity with collaborative task management software (i.e. Asana, Trello, Basecamp)

· Passion for art and culture, particularly as related to the collections of the National Museum of Asian Art

· Reading and writing proficiency in one or more foreign languages
