Since 1984, the Cook Political Report has been the gold standard for reliable and trustworthy independent, non-partisan campaign analysis. Its founder, Charlie Cook, had the vision for a newsletter that would offer analysis from a well-sourced team who understands campaigns, polling and the dynamics that impact elections and campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, State Governors, and Presidential races.

The CPR Race Ratings and Cook Partisan Voting Index (Cook PVI) are the original Cook Political Report measures that countless journalists, campaign officials, candidates, government affairs professionals, and lobbyists rely on to understand an evolving political landscape. In fact, the vernacular of races being understood as likely, lean or solid for one party or another were pioneered in CPR’s race ratings charts. And, the trenchant analysis of the CPR Editors, now released digitally to its subscribers, often winds its way into the conventional wisdom in the weeks after the newsletter has been published.

With the leadership transition from founder, Charlie Cook, to long-time editor, Amy Walter, the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter enters a new era of analysis at a time when “politics as usual” is anything but. Walter’s editorial leadership is supported by CPR veteran David Wasserman (Senior Editor & Elections Analyst); Jessica Taylor (Editor, U.S. Senate and Governors); Erin Covey (Analyst, US House); and Matthew Klein (Staff Writer). Managing Editor Ally Flinn also works closely with Walter and the Operations team, including Kathryn Hamm (Chief Operating Officer), and Beth Fekade (Client Services Coordinator).

Job Description

The Cook Political Report is seeking a creative, informed and results-oriented Manager of Marketing & Communications to lead and implement the marketing & communications strategy in the next phase of growth of our trusted and established brand.

Pairing informed best practices for communications and digital marketing with current strategy documents developed in 2024, the Manager will be responsible for: 1) coordinating communications for the proven core vision, values and services of The Cook Political Report in collaboration with the editorial and operations teams; 2) introducing, executing and sustaining communications strategies that anticipate the demands of today’s competitive and evolving marketplace; and, 3) developing new audiences, and communicating with current audiences, to grow CPR’s subscription business and its editorial offering.

An agile communicator and digital producer with high integrity, the Manager is a team-oriented and strategic communicator who understands the mission of the CPR, the discipline of independent non-partisan analysis, and is inspired by the opportunity to amplify CPR’s voice, increase our subscriber base, and introduce CPR to a new generation of consumers. Reporting to the Managing Editor and Chief Operations Officer, the Manager will also collaborate with the sales and client services team to leverage marketing and communications efforts as a conversion vehicle for subscriber retention and recruitment.

Responsibilities include:

Collaborate with operations and editorial teams to frame and amplify the core vision, values and product offerings of the CPR;
Lead marketing & communications strategy and its implementation across all audiences – journalists, academics, subscribers, and Washington professionals – with an eye toward conversion;
Lead development & deployment of social media strategy for the brand across all of its channels in coordination with individual voices of CPR team members;
Lead growth & deployment of the media-facing newsletter to showcase & amplify CPR’s insightful and timely analysis;
Serve as digital producer and designer for all social media content, including reels, stories, posts, videos, etc;
Serve as producer, editor and writer for all audio and video content, including The Odd Years, The Editors Roundtable, Briefings, etc.;
Pitch brand- and analyst- related stories, as appropriate, to journalists & outlets;
Field incoming press inquiries & coordinate CPR press briefings;
Collaborate with managing editor on design and production of website graphics and other editorial, marketing & sales multimedia content;
Collaborate with Coordinator, Client Services on event design, marketing & production for subscriber content;
Analyze core marketing and communications metrics to assess and report on success and opportunities for growth in a competitive and evolving market;
Inform editorial and operations teams regularly on best practices and evolving industry trends for social media and other digital communications;
Fulfill additional editorial and communications-related tasks as assigned;
Mentor and supervise staff as assigned

Skills & Qualifications:

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree. Concentrations in Digital Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design or related field a plus.
Excellent written and verbal skills, with the ability to represent the organization and its non-partisan voice externally across a wide range of formats.
Minimum of 5 years experience in marketing, political journalism, news production, sales, and/or communications, with at least 2 years of direct digital marketing experience.
Agility across social media platforms.
Expertise developing and producing engaging social media, podcasts, video and other multimedia content.
Ability to successfully navigate responsibilities and relationships in a fast-paced, outcomes-driven, and entrepreneurial environment.
Exceptional skills with time management, organization & teamwork.
Skilled with Canva, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, Video & audio production, Riverside.FM
Proficiency with web publishing, Excel, Google Docs/Sheets/Calendar, & Zoom.
Experience with Drupal, UX & customer journey management, and newsletter publishing a plus
