As part of the communications team, the Communication Specialist will assist with City-related projects or initiatives and help advance social media and community relations, as well as additional communications and marketing functions. This position may collaborate with other departments to achieve brand consistency, content and message coordination, and the highest internal and external communications standards to build trust and ensure transparency with the community we serve.
Essential Functions
- Assists Director of Communications with communications-related activities and city initiatives.
- Social Media:
- Assists in the coordination and execution of social media planning, management, and online communications.
- Develop marketing strategies to effectively promote city projects/programs while educating the public on issues.
- Maintains and manages social media interaction on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Nextdoor to enhance communication with the public; ensures compliance with social media standards; develops social media content in coordination with other
departments.
- Monitor and respond to public inquiries and comments on posts promptly to foster positive engagement and trust, and address public concerns (works with Public Works to respond if needed).
- Track social media performance, providing insights and recommendations.
- Marketing/Public Relations:
- Develops/updates, edits, designs/creates, and assists with producing publications and miscellaneous visual needs.
- Assists with electronic communications, including website updates and e-newsletters.
- Assists with social media management for City of Nampa platforms.
- Assists with securing photographs and video for various uses and editing them to final production, as requested.
- Promotes a positive and professional image of the City of Nampa by being knowledgeable about city programs, news, and events, appropriately answering questions and referring questions or issues beyond the scope of expertise to the appropriate city official.
- Writes and edits key external communication materials, using an engaging, concise, and appropriate style and tone which positively reflects the City of Nampa’s core values of stewardship, teamwork, and integrity; ensures accuracy of information and quality control
over outgoing products; develops messages appropriate for a wide variety of subjects and diverse audiences.
- Brand Compliance: Works with the Director of Communications to monitor and enforce brand compliance using colors, logos, and design materials.
- Internal Communications: Assists with internal communication in the employee newsletter and REACH monitors.
- Website Support: Assists with general website updates as assigned.
- Citizen’s Academy: Assists with the City of Nampa’s Citizens’ Academy, including presentation development, promotion, and event-related preparations.
Additional Functions
- Assists with creation of needed materials and information for the public regarding city government; promotes city/departmental programs, projects, and facilities; keeps the public informed about city/departmental operations, programs, services, activities, and issues;
responds to inquiries or comments from the public, answers general questions, resolves problems/complaints, or refers questions to the appropriate individual/department.
- Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, audio/visual equipment, digital camera, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including the use of graphics/design, photo management, photography, videography, word processing,
database management, presentations, e-mail, internet, or other computer programs.
- Attend meetings and various community activities or events, as needed.
- Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends seminars, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate and where budget allows.

Required Education, Experience, & License/Certifications
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field preferred or experience which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s essential functions
- Valid Driver’s License.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of graphic design elements, printing processes, and layout/production techniques.
- Ability to use photography equipment for images and video production. A good understanding of audio/visual equipment and advanced knowledge of design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and Canva.
- Ability to develop and implement intriguing content across digital platforms relevant for a variety of audiences.
- Ability to write, develop, prepare, and edit effective communication and promotional materials, and must be able to create and deliver effective public presentations.
- Maintain an eye for detail and deliver on deadline.
- Ability to attend meetings and events occasionally in the evening and on weekends, and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Operates within budgets and deadlines for various projects by following an established production schedule.
- Keeps immediate supervisor updated concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new and improved ways of addressing such issues.

- Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
