A 2% base salary increase is scheduled to become effective with the first full pay period that begins after July 1, 2025 .
The Assistant Planner position is approved for FY25/26 & may start after July 1, 2025. Recruitment may be used to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.
THE POSITION The Assistant Planner supports urban and municipal planning efforts by conducting research, analyzing data, and preparing reports. Working under senior planners, they assist with zoning regulations, land use policies, and environmental assessments. Key duties include evaluating permits, interpreting site plans, and providing planning-related information to the public. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential for success in this role.

About The Planning Division
The Planning Division recommends and implements land use policies, processes land use applications and prepares and processes updates and revisions to the General Plan, Municipal Code, Landscape guidelines and Design guidelines. This division provides staff support to City Council, the Planning Commission, Environmental and Historical Preservation Board, and Development Review Team.

About The Community Development Department
The Community Development Department (CDD) provides a variety of development, business and property owner services. The CDD administers development review and project entitlement activities, performs long range planning, and maintains the City’s General Plan. The department also performs building plan review, issues various permits and performs inspections for new and altered projects. The CDD manages a comprehensive community enhancement program that includes nuisance abatement, and parking control among a host of other services. The department oversees the full-service operations for Animal Services including animal care, adoption, and public safety.

D ISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Assistant Planner is the entry-level class in the professional planning class series. Incumbents are responsible for providing assistance to higher-level planners in the areas of research, data collection and report preparation and for conducting research and analysis on routine to moderately complex planning projects. Incumbents initially work under close supervision preparing planning studies and reports and are expected to become increasingly knowledgeable and carry out assignments with increasing independence.
Assistant Planner is distinguished from Associate Planner in that incumbents in the latter class are responsible for conducting research and analysis on moderate to complex planning projects, requiring a higher degree of independent judgment and planning expertise.
