A
Personnel Security Specialist (PSS) is a professional who manages and protects an organization's security clearance and personnel vetting processes, ensuring that only
trustworthy, properly cleared individuals have access to sensitive or classified information.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Security Clearance Management
- Process and maintain background investigations and security clearance applications (Confidential, Secret, Top Secret, etc.)
- Use systems like DISS, eAPP, SWFT, or NBIS to track investigations and clearances
- Submit and review forms (SF-86, SF-85, etc.) for completeness and accuracy
- Adjudication Support
- Review investigation results to determine eligibility for access to classified information
- Identify and document security concerns (e.g., financial, criminal, or foreign influence issues)
- Recommend actions such as denial, revocation, or suspension of clearances
- Personnel File Maintenance
- Maintain up-to-date security files and records for cleared personnel
- Ensure compliance with NISPOM, DoD 5200.2-R, and other federal security regulations
- Security Briefings, Training & Education
- Conduct initial, annual, and debriefing sessions on security awareness and procedures
- Educate employees on handling classified material and reporting security incidents
- Develop and publish quarterly Security Newsletter
- Incident Reporting
- Process and investigate security violations, loss of classified material, or suspicious behavior reports
- Liaise with government agencies (e.g., DSS/DCSA, DoD CAF) as needed
- Visit Request Maintenance
- Coordinate VR renewals/required information with employees to maintain access where needed
- Process new VR requests
- Collaboration with Facility Security Officer (FSO)
- Work closely with the FSO to ensure personnel and facility security requirements align
- Support audits, inspections, and self-assessments
Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of NISPOM and clearance process
- Attention to detail and data accuracy
- Communication and confidentiality skills
- Familiarity with security databases (DISS, eAPP, JPAS/NBIS, SWFT, ACCS)
- Team mindset working with others to provide superior support
Desired Skills/Abilities:
- Additional experience in contract support, travel and other business areas a plus
- Willingness to cross-train and support multiple support functions within a small company
- Working knowledge of Costpoint, MS suite and Adobe
Education and Experience:
- Five years of security-related experience preferred
- Security Professional training and continuing education a plus
Work Schedule and Location:
- Full-time position with support expected during normal working hours (M-F, 8-5)
- 100% remote with occasional local travel required for meetings
