Job Overview
Our newsletters are at the core of what we do, as they are our most direct connection to our audience. With a rapidly growing list of 400,000 subscribers (60,00 of which pay for our premium content) we are hiring for a Newsletter Editor to oversee the production of our daily and weekly newsletters.
We are seeking an experienced editor to conceive and implement a creative vision for how our newsletters can best serve our subscribers, and can uplift the original reporting, opinion, and video we produce daily. This role is perfect for someone who loves experimenting with content formats and thinking strategically about audience engagement, and who cares deeply about the future of our democracy.
This role will be part of our News team, working closely with Democracy Docket editors and reporters to help ensure our newsletters are consistently compelling, timely, accurate, and aligned with our brand. It will also work cross functionally to align newsletter production with growth and engagement goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide newsletter strategy and production for fast-growing, pro-democracy news outlet focused on voting, elections, and the courts.
- Work closely with reporters and editors to oversee our daily newsletter and two weekly newsletters (7 sends a week), including some writing.
- Produce at least 4 additional monthly sends to highlight our best content and capture high-attention moments, ensuring they align with audience expectations and further company goals
- Closely monitor Democracy Docket news coverage, as well as social and video, to ensure newsletters reflect our latest reporting and other content.
- Collaborate with our Growth team to evaluate key newsletter metrics and ensure newsletters are helping grow our paid subscription membership and advance other organizational goals.
- Provide additional editing support as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Strong grasp of email newsletter design and best practices
- Solid news judgment in responding to fast-moving breaking news
- Ability to quickly sharpen and polish copy in a line-edit.
- A solid grasp of voting and democracy issues is a big plus — experience covering politics, government, elections or campaigns is also helpful.
- Detail-oriented, with an unwavering commitment to accuracy.
- Enthusiasm for mission-driven, pro-democracy journalism.
- Ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines.
- Comfort using platforms like WordPress, Asana, HubSpot, Buffer, Airtable is a strong plus.
Work Environment
This is a full-time role based out of either our Washington, D.C. or Jersey City office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
This position will require some availability during evening and weekend hours. You should be comfortable adapting to fast-paced workflows and being responsive to urgent editorial needs, including outside of normal business hours.

Salary Range: $100,000-$120,000
