Responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising a comprehensive program that will benefit the senior community of the Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County area. The individual will be responsible for utilizing the multipurpose senior center facility to meet the recreational, educational, cultural, social, and economic needs of the elderly. Work is performed under regular supervision by the Superintendent of Senior Services. Supervision is exercised over other seasonal, part-time, and volunteer staff.
- Plan, implement, and coordinate recurring and new programs for ages 55 and older.
- Follow and perform all safety regulation requirements for working with the public.
- Plan and coordinate on and off-site educational, social, and recreational activities.
- Develop activities and arrange speakers/classes to promote the health and overall well being of the senior community.
- Outlines class format, register participants, and keeps accurate records pertaining to activity.
- Coordinate occasional special events for the participants of the center.
- Establish relationships with outside senior organizations as well as other community organizations in search of news programs and activities.
- Promote program offerings within the Center and throughout the community.
- Handle rental of senior center facilities using CivicRec software.
- Coordinate special events, programming, and actionable content for the monthly newsletter and assist in the preparation of the newsletter.
- Coordinate and develop special projects as directed.
- Compile reports and records; including daily deposit reports.
- Lead fitness programs as needed.
- Assist with room setups at Center when needed.
- Some overtime, nights, and weekend work required.
- The specialist will be required to travel in and out of the State of North Carolina, and occasionally internationally.
- Performs related tasks as required.
General knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to conduct recreation programs geared towards 55 and older participants' activities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and activity participants. Ability to communicate effectively in a calm professional manner, both orally and in writing; ability to prepare reports. Excellent computer skills required including experience with Microsoft Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education. Prior experience working with older adults in a group setting preferred with some experience in the recreation field. Bi-lingual and sign language experience highly desired but not required.
