Staff Writer, The New Yorker
The New Yorker is seeking a staff writer to contribute deeply reported features, along with essays, commentary, and analysis. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist who can write with rigor, depth, and clarity on a range of subjects and has a demonstrated ability to produce work that is not only timely but also enduring.
Responsibilities
- Report and write features, essays, commentary, and analysis.
- Pitch original story ideas and respond to editorial assignments.
- Collaborate with newsletter, social media, video, and other digital teams.
- Collaborate with editors throughout the editorial process, from story development to publication.
- Work closely with copy editors, fact-checkers, legal counsel, and production staff to meet The New Yorker’s deadlines and rigorous standards.
- Maintain high ethical standards in reporting and writing.
Skills & Qualifications
- A track record of exceptional writing across the different forms that The New Yorker publishes.
- Demonstrated experience with in-depth reporting, narrative writing, and ideas-driven essays.
- An ability to write with originality, clarity, and precision.
- Familiarity with The New Yorker’s tone, values, and editorial sensibility.
- Comfort working independently, with strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Willingness to travel for reporting and respond to news events as necessary.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $170,000 - $225,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
