With an excited breath and a racing heart, Jude Wise is on the brink of the next step in his music career.
A Baltimore native who moved frequently growing up, Wise said the challenges of his childhood – coupled with a lack of emotional support from his family and the struggles of coming to terms with his sexuality – drove him to music as a natural outlet.
“I was humming songs before I could even use words,” Wise said.
Wise's musical journey began with writing. He said that as soon as he learned to write, he found himself putting his thoughts on paper and later turning them into melodies. This connection between words and music led Wise to earn a degree from UCF in writing and rhetoric in August, he said.
“Studying writing felt like a good middle ground between my passions and opportunity for a potential professional pursuit,” Wise said.
Studying writing was the best way for Wise to improve not only his songwriting but his marketing and social media management as well, he said.
Wise’s TikTok account currently has more than 200,000 followers and nine videos on his account have over one million views.
“I hope to utilize the platform to boost my passion for music,” Wise said.
While his online content mainly revolves around comedy, Wise said that he hopes his personality and relatability are more draws to his music.
Stage performances, however, aren’t new to Wise. From a young age, he sang in youth groups and participated in theater, which he said made performing before an audience feel like a second nature.
Gabrielle Jones, UCF alumna and Wise's closest friend, attested to these claims.
“He exudes confidence when he’s onstage in a way that’s not totally different from how he is off stage, but more so in a way where it’s obvious that he’s in his element and exactly where he belongs,” Jones said. “He just shines on stage because he is where he is meant to be.”

Jones said that one of her favorite things about Wise is his authenticity and unabashedness to be himself.
“Some people put on a personality depending on who they’re around, but that’s not Jude,” Jones said. “No matter where he is, he’s just Jude.”
Wise said that the more he finally accepted himself for who he is, the easier it was to tell personal stories with his music.
Now the frontman of 22 in Jersey, Wise said he led the band to its first performance earlier this year at UCF's Battle of the Bands. The band writes and produces music in several different genres, all with an alternative-funk flare, he said. While the band is likely to part ways once members graduate, Wise said, he will treasure the experiences and connections made during their time together.
For now, his focus remains on building a dedicated audience, even if it's small.
“I’ve always valued storytelling in music and my favorite artists inspire me to tell stories the way they do," Wise said. "I want people to recognize the stories I tell and listen."
Wise said that right now, his music primarily falls into the alternative genre, but that with his wide range of music influences, he can see himself being the kind of person who doesn't stick to one specific style or genre.
Wise said he hopes to apply his writing education in a way that respects the rules of language while knowing when to break them to make his stories resonate.
"I want to use my education in writing and rhetoric, conform to the rules within the dynamics of language and know when to break them when I’m telling my story,” Wise said.
