The Editor carries book projects from creation to press. Working alongside the Editorial Director, the Creative team, and outside authors, the Editor owns the accuracy, clarity, and voice of every title in their portfolio, and keeps each project moving on schedule and on standard.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage multiple book projects simultaneously, from concept through final press approval, in a fast-paced environment.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for outside authors, contributors, and rights holders for the full duration of a project, providing regular updates and clear deadlines.
• Fact checks names, dates, attributions, and captions.
• Partner with the Design team on typesetting and layout, correcting copy in InDesign.
• Maintain house style and voice across every title, and keep schedules, trackers, and version control current.
• Coordinate with Production on press schedules, proofs, and final files.
Requirements
• Three or more years of editorial experience at a publishing house, magazine, or comparable title.
• Experience editing or writing for a publication devoted to content relevant to our books: art, design, fashion, travel, architecture, and international brands.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a high level correspondence style suited to authors, agents, and brand partners.
• Excellent organizational skills and command of schedules and deadlines across concurrent projects.
• High level of attention to detail, for example error free copy.
• Strong command of Adobe InDesign in relation to typesetting and correcting copy in layout.
• Working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.
• Able to work independently, prioritize, and carry projects forward without close supervision.
Preferred
• Written and spoken proficiency in Arabic. Assouline publishes and partners across the wider Middle East, and this ability supports direct work with regional authors, institutions, and collaborators.
