Founded in 2001, Resident Advisor (RA) is one of the world's longest-running music media brands and a cornerstone of the dance, electronic and DJ ecosystem. The site's audience of over 6 million monthly users is drawn in by a combination of news, club listings and ticketing, RA-branded events at venues and festivals worldwide, original films and a weekly mix series that has run for 18 years.
As an independent company run by devoted dance music enthusiasts, our mission is to bring together the world's electronic music communities. Our Global Contributor Network (GCN) and international teams help us establish connections with hyper-niche local scenes.
We became B-Corp certified earlier this year, which counts us among businesses leading a global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy; and part of a community that meets high standards of social and environmental impact.
We especially welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, abilities, ethnicities, experiences, gender identities, and sexual orientations. We aim for our team to reflect the communities we engage with. We ensure everyone is valued and respected by actively promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in our workplace.
Purpose of the role:
We are looking for someone with a single-minded dedication to news, who can handle an important role within RA. The News Editor oversees the global news section. This is not only one of the most viewed parts of our website, but also one of the most digested components of our social media and newsletter offerings. You will be a funnel through which countless voices in the dance and electronic ecosystem are transmitted to the outside world—they will be competing for your attention, so you will require creativity and resourcefulness in order to afford appropriate balance of coverage. The News Editor works directly with the Editor and others on the editorial and content leadership team to decide what is and isn't appropriate for coverage, as well as what format said news will work best in. Impact and speed are essential.
It is the News Editor's responsibility to cover breaking news in the world of dance music, from industry happenings to major festivals, as well as overseeing the delivery of longer news features and investigative pieces where club culture intersects with social change, business and politics. In addition to writing and editing regular news pieces, the News Editor will liaise daily with a small team of staff writers in London, Berlin and New York, as well as freelance contributors from across our GCN. Our ideal candidate can switch reactively between quick hits for social media and authoritative reports on weighty topics concerning RA's followers, clients and the many creatives who make up our world. RA's News Editor will therefore be as involved with the company's editorial vision as a curator, social media content creator and features writer rolled into one.
Key responsibilities:
- Sourcing news stories from around the globe
- Writing, editing and publishing news pieces on a daily basis
- Working with discretion and mindfulness on top-level stories that will often be seen and shared by 100,000s of people
- Building and maintaining relationships with PR firms, labels, artists and promoters, as well as internal staff working across RA's commercial departments and GCN
- Plan and oversee developments and innovations in RA news alongside the editorial and content leadership team
- Professionally representing the RA brand at all times
- Captioning and sharing news posts on social media, including X and Facebook
We're looking for:
- An innate passion to be both first and best at covering the news
- Experience writing and editing to the quality a news desk within a leading publication requires
- Strong understanding of electronic music, pop culture and nuanced sensitivities of the global community RA serves to represent
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience using social media to share news stories
- Experience working within a team structure and managing freelance contributors
- High level of attention to detail, excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise demands and meet deadlines
What we offer you:
- Generous annual leave policies, including a company-wide closure period at year-end, aimed at promoting work-life balance
- Flexibility in working arrangements, offering hybrid or remote work options based on role requirements and location.
- Matching pension schemes and/or 401k
- Comprehensive staff wellbeing initiatives, featuring regular activities and workplace programmes to support mental and physical health. This includes provisions such as Mental Health Days, subsidised therapy, discounted Classpass memberships, and custom-fitted earplugs
- Company-led social events, team lunches, and discounts on RA merch
- Paid annual volunteering allowance, encouraging contributions to community projects and charities you care about
- Regular company-wide Q&A's with senior leadership, along with ongoing virtual educational training sessions for all staff
- A transparent internal company culture committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (see: https://ra.co/about/diversity).
- Active involvement in community projects within the electronic music community (see: https://ra.co/about/community).
Our values:
- Electronic music is art
- We celebrate the progressive values that underpin electronic music
- We advocate for a more inclusive and equitable electronic music community
- We honour the past, present and future of electronic music
- We use innovation to empower the community
- We choose honesty over gain and purpose over profit
- We're always front left
