About The Role
Wiley Research is navigating one of the most significant transformations in its history — reshaping its business model, its ways of working, and its competitive positioning at a moment of acute market disruption. The people who make this transformation succeed are Wiley's staff: the publishers, operations professionals, and specialists who show up every day and do the work. Keeping those people informed, motivated, and aligned is not a luxury — it is a strategic requirement.
The Senior Manager, Research Communications is the person who makes that happen. This is a communications strategist and practitioner who will develop and execute a comprehensive internal communications strategy for the Wiley Research business — one that translates complex strategic developments into clear, human narratives; celebrates progress honestly; and gives staff the context they need to understand why the work they are doing matters.
This role works in close partnership with Wiley's corporate communications function, sitting at the intersection of enterprise messaging and Research-specific context. The Senior Manager will attend Research Leadership Team (RLT) and related senior leadership meetings — not as a notetaker, but as a communications architect — observing strategic intent, shaping how it is communicated outward, and building the mechanisms that ensure staff across Research feel heard, informed, and inspired.
The right candidate brings strong writing, editorial judgment, and stakeholder management skills, and knows how to calibrate communications for audiences ranging from frontline publishing staff to executive leadership. Critically, this person is comfortable working through periods of significant uncertainty and organizational change — and has the maturity to know when to acknowledge difficulty honestly rather than paper over it with corporate gloss.
Job Responsibilities
- Communications Strategy & Planning
- Develop and own the Research communications strategy — defining channels, cadence, audience segmentation, and narrative priorities that constitute the Research communications plan for each quarter and year.
- Partner with Wiley's corporate communications function to ensure Research-specific messaging aligns with and reinforces enterprise themes, while retaining the specificity and relevance that makes Research communications credible to Research staff.
- Attend Research Leadership Team (RLT) meetings, RLT+1 forums, and related senior leadership sessions to stay current on strategic priorities and decisions — and to advise leadership on communications implications in real time.
- Design a Research communications calendar that gives staff a predictable, regular window into the direction of the business — reducing the information vacuum that often drives speculation and disengagement during transformation.
- Content Development & Narrative
- Write, edit, and produce Research communications across formats — all-hands presentations, leadership messages, internal newsletters, strategic updates, town hall talking points, and milestone announcements — with a voice that is clear, direct, and human.
- Translate complex strategic and financial information into accessible, meaningful narratives for staff audiences — never dumbing content down, but always making it relevant and actionable.
- Build and maintain a repository of core Research messaging — including strategy narratives, transformation milestones, and frequently asked questions — that can be adapted for different audiences and channels.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts across Research to develop communications on specific initiatives and organizational changes, ensuring technical accuracy without sacrificing readability.
- Staff Engagement & Culture
- Design and execute initiatives that give Research staff meaningful opportunities to engage with the transformation — ask questions, share feedback, and understand how their work connects to the broader strategy — without creating the illusion of consultation where final decisions have already been made.
- Develop communication approaches that acknowledge the genuine difficulty of working through market uncertainty and organizational change, while reinforcing staff confidence in the direction of the business and the leadership navigating it.
- Track the effectiveness of Research communications through feedback mechanisms, open rates, and leadership pulse checks — using data to continuously improve reach, relevance, and impact.
- Identify and elevate staff stories, team wins, and examples of effective new ways of working that reinforce the cultural shifts Research is trying to make.
- Executive Communications Support
- Support the EVP / GM Research and VP, Business Management & Strategic Programs with communications preparation for major internal moments — all-hands meetings, leadership team offsites, quarterly business reviews, and organizational change announcements.
- Draft executive talking points, presentation scripts, and written messages that reflect the voice and priorities of Research leadership with clarity and authenticity.
- Brief Research leaders on the communications landscape before major forums — helping them anticipate staff questions, calibrate messaging, and avoid inadvertent contradictions with prior communications.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in internal communications, corporate communications, or a closely related discipline, with demonstrated success designing and executing communications programs in complex or rapidly changing organizational environments.
- Exceptional writing and editorial skills: able to produce polished, publication-ready communications across formats and audiences with speed and independence.
- Strong executive communications experience: comfortable writing for senior leaders, including ghostwriting executive messages, all-hands scripts, and board-facing narratives.
- Track record of developing and executing integrated internal communications strategies — not just producing content, but defining the architecture of how an organization communicates with itself.
- Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with corporate communications functions while maintaining the voice and relevance of a business-unit audience.
- Mature judgment about communications in periods of organizational change: knowing what to say, what not to say, and how to be honest without being destabilizing.
Preferred
- Experience in a publishing, media, information services, or academic/scientific knowledge company.
- Familiarity with change management communication principles and frameworks.
- Comfort using AI-assisted writing and content production tools to improve quality and speed of output.
- Experience attending and contributing to senior leadership forums in a communications advisory capacity.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field.
