Newsletter Writer / Strategist

We’re looking for a curious, analytical writer to help shape the next generation of our newsletters.

The role sits across editorial, audience development, search, and growth. We want someone who writes with a real point of view and who also treats a newsletter as a product: something you can test, improve, and grow over time.

You’ll write and develop newsletters across Food52, turning everything we cover (recipes, cooking advice, home, design, shopping, hosting, travel, and culture) into emails people look forward to opening. Just as important, you’ll help us understand why people open, click, subscribe, come back, and convert.

What you’ll do

Write, edit, and produce recurring Food52 newsletters with a voice readers recognize.
Develop new formats, recurring features, and franchises: the kind of thing a reader goes looking for in their inbox habitually on a Tuesday morning.
Work with the editorial team to turn Food52’s broader content strategy into great inbox programming.
Sweat the details. Subject lines, preview text, structure, pacing, links, and calls to action are all yours to make better.
Use performance data to see which topics, formats, and approaches are landing, then tell us in plain English what it means and what to do next.
Track and report on open rate, click-through rate, click-to-open rate, subscriber growth, engagement, retention, traffic, and conversion.
Make testing a habit: subject lines, send times, frequency, format, content mix, and calls to action.
Partner with audience and growth teams to bring in new subscribers and keep the ones we have.
Build distinct strategies for different newsletters. Someone who reads us for weeknight dinners wants something different from someone who reads us for linen napkins
Use search as an editorial signal. What people type into Google (and, more and more, into AI tools) tells us what they’re cooking this week, what they’re stuck on, what season it is in their kitchen. Spot the evergreen stories that deserve a second life in email.
Collaborate with editors, writers, social, commerce, product, design, and analytics.
Help set up benchmarks and dashboards so the editorial team can understand performance at a glance.
Keep up with how email, search, AI discovery, and social are changing the way people find and read about food and home.

Who you are

You are an experienced writer and editor. You have an ear for voice and an eye for what’s next.
You read newsletters for pleasure and have opinions about them.
You’re at ease using data to make creative decisions, and confident enough to test an idea before the data exists.
You have experience with newsletter analytics, audience development, content strategy, and/or SEO.
You wonder why one story takes off and the one right next to it doesn’t.
Search intent, keyword demand, evergreen content, segmentation, engagement funnels, conversion: you know your way around most of these.
You care about food, cooking, home, design, and culture, and how they fit into an ordinary day.
You’re happy in a fast-moving newsroom with lots of collaborators and deadlines.

Ideally, you have

2 to 4 years in editorial, newsletters, audience development, content strategy, and SEO
Experience writing, building and managing a high-frequency consumer newsletter
Experience with email-first marketing platforms and analytics tools
Familiarity with search tools like Google Search Console, Google Trends.
Familiarity with A/B testing and audience segmentation
Experience at a food, lifestyle, media, commerce, or consumer brand

What success looks like

We want newsletters that feel like Food52 and get smarter and more useful over time. That means:

More people opening and clicking, and coming back to do it again
Franchises readers recognize, and would miss if they stopped showing up
A clearer picture of how email connects to editorial, search, social, commerce, and membership
Audience insights that make the broader Food52 editorial strategy better
