So… I’ll just be dead honest with you. This is not your typical internship. It really isn’t at all. My first job was an intern at a tech company. And while it was sick going out to lunch all the time and drinking unlimited soda… I got fat and really didn’t have a ton to do.
At this internship, you won’t say either of those things. Well… you might get fat. I can’t control that. But you will have so much to do! You will build something! And it is going to be a blast.
My name is Rob Metcalf and right now I’m the only person working at my company, Rob Metcalf Design. I’m a freelance UX designer and work mostly with tech startups. Right now it is small, but I believe it can turn into something big.
That is where you come in!
I am looking for someone who doesn’t want to go to a job and just sit and twiddle their thumbs. I want to find a young person who is beyond stoked to work hard, break stuff, and get messy. This is how I picture our days going.
- You help me with The Daily’s. Daily reach outs to potential clients. Daily posts for my company’s social media. And probably some daily posts for a few other ideas I have cooking. That is probably 1 hour or 90 minutes.
- We start working on THE FUTURE! I currently have 3 ideas I truly believe can be massive, but I don’t have a ton of time to get everything done on them. The rest of our days are spent working on these ideas. We won’t be doing many at a time, just focusing on one at a time so we can make some real progress.
So what things are we going to do?
- Design - obviously. UI design, graphic design, motion design, UX design, design for social media. Design. Design. DESIGN!
- Make videos - You might be operating the camera. Maybe the microphones. Maybe just talking with me and answering questions. We might go and film strangers or friends of mine. But film.
- Music - yes… that probably will happen. My office is also my studio, and I would imagine we will be making music on occasion. If you play an instrument, well honestly we might not get anything done, but it will be fun!
- Writing - I completely expect this is going to require some writing. But writing with a purpose. No lame memos or powerpoints. Something real. Something in the wild. Could be scripts for the videos we make, copywriting for an ad we are making, or maybe you help me write pitches to potential clients.
- Sales - before this scares you off, let me be clear on what I mean. Not selling. I can do that. I’m talking sales prep. Figuring out who to sell to, going through lists, creating lists, and making sure data is correct.
Software we will be using:
- Figma
- Final Cut Pro
- Logic Pro
- After Effects
- Probably not much other Adobe stuff, but maybe. I just sort of hate Adobe.
- LinkedIn
- Gmail
- Some sort of email tool
- Brevo (email tool)
I don’t care that you have a ton of experience in each of these, but I would say it would be great if you have made something in them before.
I am hoping to hire someone 3 days per week for about 4 to 5 hours. I’m paying $15 per hour, plus my wife will bake for you.
Requirements:
I don’t give a crap if you are in college. Literally doesn’t matter to me at all. If you are, that is awesome, but if you aren’t or think you might drop out soon, that is just fine with me.
Experience? Honestly I don’t really care about that either. Who has experience when they are 20? I can tell you… NO ONE! Or… WEIRDOS! This is the thing you do to get some experience.
But I do have some requirements.
- You need to be an amazing communicator. Written, verbal, on camera, with strangers, friends, whoever. Amazing. Communicator.
- You need to be nice. I need to be able to spend 12 hours per week with you and not want to fire you.
- You need to be techie. Meaning you need to type fast, learn software quickly. I don’t care if you can code, but it would be sick. You need to know what AI is and how to use it. Ideally you probably have made something before… like a website, or a flyer for your friends band, or a business card. Something.
- You need to be on time to my house. This is not a remote job. Repeat… this job is not remote. We work at my house in Midvale during the afternoons.
- That being said, if this goes super well and you end up working more hours, more than happy to talk about you working from home sometimes. But no more than 2 days per week.
- You probably need to be at least somewhat funny. Not Adam Sandler or Will Ferrel funny, but something. Or maybe you just need to know how to laugh.
- More than anything, I need you to bring ENERGY! I don’t want to be the one starting every conversation. I don’t want to just feel so awkward that you won’t talk. I want you to be excited. If that isn’t your normal personality, I would probably not apply.
So what do you get out of this:
- $15 per hour 12 hours per week to have a freaking blast.
- The most insane letter of recommendation you have ever read.
- Meet literally everyone I know.
- A real thing on your resume that says, “I worked at RMD, and we did this _______”. Could be:
- We started a new product that made $100k per year.
- We added 50k followers to LinkedIn
- We grew an email newsletter with 10k founders.
- Lastly, I really do believe that with the right person, we can make build something amazing. And if that happens, you are employee #1. With a salary, the best benefits you’ve ever seen (you pay nothing for health insurance), profit sharing, and likely to be a leader on a team. Oh and… obviously, ski passes and climbing passes. Pretty dang fun.
Like I said, this is different. This isn’t your normal job. And I’m not looking for someone normal. I’m looking for… well, I’m looking for you!
So this is the first test… when you send me your application, I want you to make a video of yourself. I want you to tell me who you are, what you’re doing right now in life, what you want to be doing, and why you think this job would help you get there.
I’ll be hiring someone by the end of September 2025. So get them in quick!
